I don't wear shoes at home but I rarely ask others to take theirs off when they visit unless they have heels. Most people take theirs off automatically if its rainy or snowy.

Removing heels in an apartment building with wood floors keeps the neighbors from hating us.

Chicago's craigslist is filled with rental company spam and scans, but there are gems in there. If you are looking in more popular neighborhoods like wicker park, downtown, etc, I found the easiest way to weed through is to search by street name rather than neighborhood. Also if it doesn't list an address but just gives an area its probably a rental company that takes a commission. A good resources is: http://yochicago.com/apartment-lists/
They have a list of apartments for several neighborhoods you can just contact the management companies directly.

I love the french doors idea. After living with only an open space for awhile, my bf and I definitely thought it would be nice to have a separate room that way he can play his video games while I talk on the phone or watch tv. If you open it up completely you might regret it.

I agree get rid of the reposts and best of posts. If I want to find something I will just search. When the content gets too repetitive I just stop reading for a few months hoping there will be something new when I finally come back.

We use solar powered lights to light our walk. A great compromise they don't waste energy and are still welcoming since as long as we had some sun that day, they stay lit most of the evening.
