Ants also do not like vinegar. I found a cleaner at the grocery store that had vinegar in it, and sprayed it all over my bathroom. It worked and after a few days the ants were gone. What I get here is that there is no magic solution. The scent of cinnamon gives me a head ache, so that won't work for me, but I love the idea of baking soda.

Hawaii is a great inspiration for a color palate. All she has to do is look outside. For me a bedroom is a sanctuary and a dark color like the one posted is a great backdrop for light colored furniture and whites, grays, greens... all colors shown out her window.

I would paint the entire room and not an accent wall. It will be beautiful to see the natural light pass through the room and how the light changes in the room. And if you can't have a little drama in the bedroom where can you have it?

I use two small X leg benches as a coffee table. The upside is that although they are rattan, they are padded and can act as extra seating, and I can pull one up to the sofa if I am working on something or eating there. What about covering it with a cool vinyl or wallpaper? There is a table in the Ikea Hack section this week that was covered in snake skin.

Also, from a comfort level, you might want to get a couple of pieces of wood that fit together over the springs. Then you can put the mattress over those for more support. You can store those pieces in the back of your closet or behind the piece.
