My parents had one of these put into their house like 15 years ago -- and we always thought it worked and looked great (our house wasn't modern either). And people always thought it was cool when my mom opened it ;) Future Kitchens Will Have Hidden Vent Hoods | Apartment Therapy Unplggd |

Make sure your guests know ahead of time what pets you have. The last time I visited my best friend from college, she'd recently gotten a new cat -- I'm horribly allergic to cats and after one horrible night, I was forced to get a hotel room. I felt so guilty leaving, but now know to always tell my guests about my dog before they come to stay! Apartment Therapy Boston | How To: Make Guests Feel Welcome |

Don't waste money on nonstick pans -- they don't last and the health questions they raise are quite scary -- particularly when you're responsible for what your entire family is eating. Apartment Therapy The Kitchn | What is the Best Roasting Pan for Holiday Cooking? |

Go with an Iomega drive -- they have tons of styles and colors to choose from, are extremely reliable, and virtually indestructible -- one of the major tech magazines (I can't remember which one) just did a review of all the portable hard drives -- they ran an Iomega drive over with a truck and dropped it from like 20 feet. It was still in working condition after both! Apartment Therapy Unplugged | Good Questions: Small Portable Hard Drive Recommendations? |
