Jamie Oliver recommends this to help smoothies "stick" so that you stay fuller longer. I always put in at least a small handful.

Made this for me and my lacto-ovo roommate for lunch today. Turned out absolutely stellar!

It is locked:
- When I am out of the house (say grocery shopping or walking the dog).
- When I am in the shower
- When I am in the back yard
- When I am sleeping (either napping during the day, or in bed at night)

Otherwise, as long as I am awake and at home it is unlocked. We live in a rural city of about 20,000 so I'm not terribly concerned for my safety. Most of my friends don't even knock when they come in.

When I lived in Vancouver I generally locked it even when I was home. This was after many horror stories and nagging from my boyfriend at the time, who'd lived in Vancouver all his life.

I remember my letters from Santa through the Canada post. It was definitely one of the best parts of Christmas.

Only if I have an unexpected need for a tampon.

Otherwise, who cares what they keep in there? Is my curiosity worth violating another person's privacy in their own home?

I agree on dish sponges: yuck! They smell bad and I don't fancy using something germ infested to clean with. Solution? Having a big drawer full of cloths to wash dishes with that I throw in the laundry machine (on cold, with detergent, because THAT WORKS JUST FINE) before they get funky.

And to the above commenter: no need to use paper towels every time I wash my dishes, wow! There is a compromise between the vile kitchen sponge and wasteful (and downright useless, for this purpose) papertowels. You're not going to get MRSA cleaning up your own cooking!

I like how she's moving her hands the way adults use their hands when they're talking, and how she looks just a little annoyed when Dad (I'm assuming) stops paying attention to her to laugh. She's babbling, but she seems to think she has something important to say!

My family has a cordless phone. When we are out in the yard doing yard work we bring it outside with us and leave it on the porch if we think we might be missing important calls. Otherwise, we have an answering machine. Fascinating!

PS Hooray, we are going to have yet another argument about taking shoes off when going in and out of houses on AT! What a joy! Who will be the first person to bring up their embarrassment of mismatched socks or smelly feet? Who will be the first person to bring up the fact that their (insert expensive name brand here) shoes coordinate with their outfit? Who will be the first person to say they are an excellent host who despite making their guests take off their shoes leaves a basket of socks at the doorway for them! Have I missed anything else yet? We should make this either a) a drinking game or b) a bingo card, already.

I don't like the western theme period, so luckily I will never have to face this conundrum! Hooray!

I actually live in the "West" anyway, well, Northern BC, so dead animals on walls, either skeleton or taxidermy, are a fixture of every household around, and I'd rather not include them in my own. I feel no particular revulsion, per se, but it's about the same feeling that some of you guys get seeing the "Keep Calm" posters. That's skulls and disembodied heads, for me.

We had two: an encyclopedic dictionary, and then a "kids dictionary" with colour pictures and easy language. They both got a LOT of love from my brother and I. :) I'm a history grad, and he's going into chemical engineering in the fall. Our parents definitely raised us believing in the importance of education, but also with a genuine love of learning, which I think is just as, if not more, valuable.

I don't have to ask guests to take off their shoes because I, like many others here, am Canadian. It's a non-issue because it's just not done.

My in-laws are from Ireland, and don't take off their shoes in the house. They all thought it was very funny that I insisted on doing so when I went into their house, and that they would find my sneakers tucked into odd corners of the house during the day. I just. . . couldn't not take them off.

When they came visiting, though, I let them keep their shoes on. It's no skin off my nose: they're my freakin' inlaws. Everybody else, I don't need to ask because that's just what's done, here.

I live in a city where houses are still quite expensive (especially considering that I live far from any urban centre), so in order to buy a house my husband and I have resigned ourselves to the reality of having to buy a hideous outdated house if we want to own anything at all. I don't mind, really, because with something ugly, we can remodel it as our own over time. If you buy something "modern" in this town it's almost undoubtedly a cookie cutter stainless steel appliance and beige walls monstrosity AND cost about five times what it's worth.

Thanks for all your ideas! I think I will pick her up a couple of Debbie Bliss' books from Amazon.

Sadly, we live in Northern BC, a long, long way from any shops to physically go shopping in, otherwise a trip would be in order!

She has a closet full of yarn hoarded already, anyway. Her husband would kill her if she brought any more home! ;)

Although I might add that I live in a town with an astronomically high divorce rate and an astronomically high redneck rate, so it's possible my sampling of families isn't exactly the greatest. ;)

I know that I personally wouldn't be able to resist the temptation of having it there.

Apartment Therapy Los Angeles | TV's in The Kitchen: Cozy or Excess?

I hate it. I've never seen a family with a TV in the kitchen that doesn't have it on all the time, distracting people from *gasp* talking to one another at the table. Kitchens for my family are an almost sacred space, and the TV violates that.

Now, as for a radio or an ipod dock, I do love to listen to music while I cook and clean.

Actually, one of my favourites is in the pic! "Never Let me Go" by Kazuo Ishiguro. :) Although I have the sombre literary cover with the fishing boat on it.

I have a (not so) secret addiction to Highlander romance novels. I devour them without stopping for breath, at times.
