ScuttledCuttle, I did remove the old fabric (as you can see in a picture on my post). I was able to reuse the foam and webbing on the seat because they were in good condition, although I did add a new layer of batting on top. And this type of chair doesn't have springs.

It may not be THAT quick, but I've done several upholstery jobs and this was one of the easiest. No hot glue either, thank goodness. I burn the crap out of my hands every time I use it.
For those saying you liked the original wood, I totally get where you're coming from. I love the look of chairs like this with a natural grayish type of wood, like restoration hardware style, but the wood was very yellow, and due to a broken leg and nail holes, it had to be painted.
