I also use my vegetable peeler. Easy and much simpler to wash!

This is amazing. I'm not sure how much this would come into use for everyday cooking but I would totally try it!

I just made a batch with my mom yesterday!

This might be a bit more effort, but my mom has always insisted on stir-frying each ingredient separately vs. altogether. Just cook one at a time using the same pan and dump into the mixing bowl as you go. This helps each item to be cooked to the idea consistency and texture. We also stir fry the noodles before adding to the veggies.

Cilantro! Tastes like soap...yech.

Also celery...like some others above, I can eat small amounts cooked to mush in things but definitely in NO raw form. I can't eat most tuna and egg salads at cafes for this reason.

I do what acvaz recommended - use the immersion blender on the potatoes plain, then whip in the milk/cream and butter with a wooden spoon. I usually just kind of "pulse" in an attempt not to overblend, but then again the only reason I use my blender is because I keep forgetting to go out and buy a potato ricer or food mill!

I'm just under 5'1"...while I don't have much of an issue with most tasks in my rental kitchen, kneading is definitely a pain and hard on my wrists without the aid of a stool. I also can't reach the top shelves of my cupboards and given the limited space I don't have the luxury of limiting these shelves to rarely used items. I basically keep the footstool closeby at all times or call my boyfriend over in a pinch.

I love this shorter countertop idea! A lower kitchen cart also seems like a great alternative...maybe one day I'll have the space for one :)

I tried out the Pretzel Bites for a Christmas party which were a huge hit!

The usual Saltine Cracker toffee and some new cookie recipes from Martha's Cookies to give out as presents.

I also helped my mom make traditional Korean Mandu and Jap chae for New Year's which was a first!

I've always been somewhat iffy about using coffee in chocolate recipes as I have a few friends who refuse to eat anything with a hint of coffee flavour. Especially since I figured it was there for this purpose, not to draw out the chocolate flavour! Maybe I'll try it out on a recipe this year :)

I just made this for a Christmas party and it was such a hit! Paired with a few good dips (one cheesy, one mustard) they were devoured and everyone loved them.

Maybe they are a bit more effort than say, a flatbread but definitely worth the effort. So good!

I use my ladle all the time as well. I do use a measuring cup occsionally but only when I'm making stock. Otherwise I don't mind the few extra dips a ladle requires.

Actually...I will say that sometimes I even go the other way and use a kitchen spoon rather than a ladle. I tend to like very broth-y soups so this allows more control in terms of the amount of liquid that goes into my bowl!

I agree with the green beans and asparagus above! They always seem to awkward to spear with a fork.

I used to pull individual kernels off cooled leftover cobs of corn when I was a kid. I've now lost the patience for that!

Sooo much. I was a pretty picky eater as a child and there are many, many foods that I refused to eat back then that I now adore. Including but not limited to:

avocados
a lot of vegetables - red peppers, onions, cauliflower, cucumber, etc. etc.
oysters
sushi (this probably isn't all that uncommon but i didn't give it another chance until i was in my twenties)
mustard

...
beer.

I try not to use the microwave for too much "cooking" but my favourite use is korean egg jiim - a steamed egg dish.

All you do is crack a couple of eggs into a bowl and add whatever you want - vegetables, salted shrimp, meat...though my go-to is pickled pollock roe. Add water measuring about half the volume, cover with plastic wrap and microwave for 3-4 minutes. Easy and delicious!

I love love LOVE my silpat and can't believe I went so long without one. I use it for everything! I bought mine at Winners for about $20.

Michelle - I did purchase a non-silpat baking mat a couple of months back (can't recall the brand - it's red) because it was on sale for under $10. It isn't terrible but I wouldn't buy another one. It just doesn't have the same magical non-stick qualities of the silpat - I've had particularly gooey cookies stick to it, and what's the point of a baking mat if still need to grease it?? I think the Silpat is definitely worth the investment.

I really like crust, so I would never make a bottomless pie! I also agree that if you're rolling the dough out anyway, it's not that much more work to transfer the crust. And I feel like you would end up with a lot more leftover crust-dough this way.

On the other hand, I do think that it could be a nice-looking change to top a pie with.
