I had chickens as pets growing up, and I loved them! They followed me around the garden, then loved to be held and pet, and let me tell you... nothing beats a fried egg that's less than 12 hours old. (My girls laid an egg a day like clockwork, by the way.) One even insisted on coming into the house through the dog door just to hang out in the kitchen with us! Sorry, but this whole "allergy" to MSG is mostly bull. It's yet another self-induced mental reaction that the media has scared into us. Ever wondered why hardly anyone had peanut allergies 50 years ago and now every other kid has it? Because parents read news articles about how "peanuts are closing your child's esophagus as we speak!!" and everyone panicks and scares their children and themselves into thinking they have an adversion to something. I bought a pound of Tahitian vanilla beans last year for very cheap. I've been using them sparingly, but last month I decided that they're going to dry up if I don't use them up soon. I made some salted caramels the other day, but for one reason or another they stayed slightly liquid instead of chewy and solid. It's more like a thick caramel sauce. I was wondering if I could make a frosting out of this? Any suggestions? Apartment Therapy The Kitchn | Open Thread 196 |
