I haven't tried it with brick, but with old unsealed concrete, I had great success in applying paste wax (http://www.homedepot.com/p/SC-Johnson-16-oz-Fine-Paste-Wood-Wax-00203/100154748#.UZFf4oKE5HY) . The wax keeps the dust down quite well.

It is pretty easy to apply, and seals in the dust quite well. The only downside is a solvent smell for a day or two. The smell dissipates pretty quickly though. Also, the wax can always be stripped later for sealing, so is a great solution for a rental.

@thorndale - my brother and sister-in-law have a tiny kitchen and an amazing Liebherr 24" fridge that really uses space well. They have loved it - now about 5 years in. I think it is the CS 1360 model: http://www.liebherr.us/HGH/en-GB/products_us-hg.wfw/id-582409-0_25091-4

@ayb922 - i want to add a second recommendation for the CARES harness. It has helped keep our fidgety 3 yo in check on several flights.

@barking ants and babybamf - we also have found wrapping small toys and bringing them out over the course of a flight has helped. Also, lots of snacks. We also use lollipops with abandon on takeoff and landing. Even bringing extras for others.

Finally, I keep a stash of Southwest drink coupons acquired on business trips and distribute to those around me in case we annoy them. That helps build some goodwill. Usually not necessary, but doesn't hurt.

Put in a bunch of IKEA dressers, then top with a countertop of your choosing. Here's one version that might give you an idea. Would be pretty inexpensive, but might still be worth getting a carpenter to trim and finish it.

I agree with many that many of the problems can be fixed. I replaced drawer slides in a rental house at a cost of about $3 per slide (using the cheapest hardware available). It made a huge difference.

Also, consider replacing the cook-top and wall oven with a range. They could then get rid of that pretty bulky wall oven cabinet, which might help open things up.

@FighttheFuture - I bought a cable modem on Amazon for about $85. I just checked Comcast's list for compatibility and bought the most up-to-date one I could find (Motorola SB6121 SURFboard DOCSIS 3.0 Cable Modem). I have had no problems with it at all.

I have bought a lot of casters from Grizzly Hardware. In general, they are reasonably good quality, but they don't have an 8 inch threaded stem caster. Grizzly Link

McMaster Carr has a tremendous selection of hardware. They have an 8 inch threaded caster: McMaster Link

Castercity also has some threaded 8 inch casters:

A final thought is that some pneumatic casters have really offensive smelling 'rubber' because of plasticizer in the material. You may find some are not suitable for use in a house.
