How To Furnish Small Living Room with Lack of Usable Wall Space? Good Questions
12/12/12 3:00 PM

Kate, I love what I see of you charming home. I agree with you about making this a room used as a parlor or a nice place for a conversation. Unfortunately the lay out you have right now does not allow comfort for 2 or more folks to have a conversation. You would be either sitting on the love seat with each other or one or more persons would be sitting on low stools. I actually reworked your floor plan and thought I could post it, but alas no. Here's what I worked up. First of all shift the area rug a full 90 degrees and towards the french doors giving a walk way between the fireplace and rug. Either purchase two love seats or 1 love seat and two comfy chairs. Place the love seat with the back facing the kitchen with a table behind it. Place the other love seat or the two comfy chairs with their back to the entry door. I would purchase an oval table as a coffee table to soften the lines a bit.
Having the setting with the chairs or additional love seat with it's back to the entry gives you a feeling that you are not stepping directly into the room. Putting the table behind the love seat near the kitchen will give you a since of depth if you place a plant or objects with a little height on the table.
Since I can't post the picture here, I will post it on my website. Look under the interior design tab. Good luck with you room.

How To Furnish Small Living Room with Lack of Usable Wall Space? Good Questions

First of all, love your home. I have to admit I sat here and spent some time on your space. I tried many different colors on the wall in photoshop and came up with at least one idea to share. I matched it with my Benjamin Moore paint fan and came up with Greenbrier Beige HC-79. It's a darker tan with green under tones. I would paint the entire wall plus the attic space above as AlexKeller suggested. The fireplace demands a lot of attention on that wall so I have a few ideas about that too. In one of my ideas I put molding around the ceiling directly above the fireplace and also beefed up the front of the shelves with molding as well as the vertical sides of the shelves and fireplace wall. The color for the molding would be whatever color white is on the walls or best matches the fireplace. As far as accesories, I would make sure I had something with height and drama on the left side of the mantel so to balance the TV. You don't have to fill every shelf with books, you can hang a picture in one or two of the spaces and then place little do-dats on the shelf.
To be perfectly honest with you, even though I love the fireplace surround, I think it's formality is too much for the architectural features of the room. It's putting up a fight. I would rather play up on them. I would dry wall the fireplace area off to the fire box but play off the centered chimmney look in the attic part by extending the box up to the ceiling just below the feature in the attic spaces. This extension would only be as wide as the chimmney piece above and begins from a mantle height leaving an "h" shape. You could then place your TV on the shelf on the right side of the mantle. I hope this make sense to you. If you are feeling so bold I will be very happy to email you my ideas and pictures. Just say the word and I will post my email address.
Good luck.

My insides are dripping with envy! I sooo want to live in a "storybook" house.
Love the garden fireplace.
Love all the artwork! If you run out of space to hang it, you could do as a friend of mine does, he changes his artwork with the seasons.
Hand out hard hats for the attic tour. :)
I have a suggestion for the missing apron on your table if you are going to keep it with the leafs in place. Either place a beautiful piece of fabric in the center only and have it drape over the sides enough to cover the space. Or find some matching aprons to have clip on pieces to slide into the void. Just a thought.
I really love you home.

Love your cabin. The fabric on the family room windows is wonderful. I feel the German. It coordinates with the fireplace stone so nicely. I just wish you would have brought the color you painted the bathroom walls into this room too. I think it would bump up the fireplace and window treatments one more notch. If you are afraid of too much color, just accent the fireplace wall in the darker shade.
Love love love your home. If you need me to, I will move in. :)

Antonio,
Love your space. As many friends as you have I think this larger space is great for you. I loved the first home you shared with us but I feel like you can breathe in this one.

I love that you collect art work and keep things that mean something to you that have a story. To me it makes your home more special. Come visit some day and you can meet all my displayed memories. (Kiss and Pee Wee Herman together, dig it.)

Love your show, you are very creative. I envy all your resources and crew that has got your back.
Was Chewie having a play date? Is that a Chewie bottle opener? I'll take old timey pinball over video games any day. Okay, I think I covered most everything.
Keep up the exciting work.

I grew up in St. Louis and everytime I get to visit from Chicago, I have to drive around in the Soulard area. This is where you see a lot of renovation and preservation. It makes me all warm and fuzzy inside to see the old being used again.

Angela,
Do you have black tile in your bathroom? Regarding the shower curtian question, I have always like the ones that allow light in and allows me to see through when showering, Norman Bates Syndrome. There are really niffity shower curtains now that look like etched glass. You have such a sleek design that I would think you would like to trim back the fabric in the bathroom. Just a thought.

Love your home. I really like the mix of old and new.
I have an idea for your TV and picture situation. IKEA sells a curtain wire hanging system, Dignett, that you could extend across the length of the wall. Hang the picture from this wire and you will be able to push it to one side without taking it up and down. You just slide it back and forth.

The next time I come home to St.Louis, can I stop by?
I love your place, I love that you take care of all these old pieces and give them life again. The kitchen cabinets are wonderful and make my knees weak. The gargoyle is the biggest and most wonderful livingroom accessory I have ever seen.
I imagine you are the type of person that goes to Union Station, sits in the Grand Ballroom and soaks in all the beauty of the architect and craftsmenship of a by gone era.

Love your home. Don't paint the front door, I really like it black.
Love your artwork, great looking painting you are working on Jeff.
The "You will wet the bed" sign, is that made with matchsticks? My Grandmother use to say if you played with fire you would wet the bed.
I also love that your cat can read.

I was just home this weekend visiting some of my old stomping grounds and Soulard was one of them. It has been a number of years since I've been there so I was very happy to see that the area is still being renovated and people such as yourself is purserving a beautiful old neighborhood. Beautiful job. It makes my heart thump.

Love it. Reminds me of my apartment in the 80's. The color scheme, lines all of it. Very nice. There are a lot of tips for being Gender friendly too for those trying to incorporate a style for both Genders. Love the blue silk dupioni drapes.
