We have two toddlers, and I just don't think leather would work for us. What has worked very very well are the hand-me-down couches we got from my parents. They are a paisley-ish pattern with browns, reds, and golds. They have held up amazingly. We have spilled whole cups of coffee, and you never see it because it blends right in with the pattern.

Well i would love to have something more chic, it seems crazy to spend money on something we will spill, stomp, and drool on.

Someday!

Ikea has awesome sheepskins for $19.99!!! They are super soft and plush, and just the right size for a baby to lie on.

Is it really ok to machine wash? Tilda has puked on ours four times already!

Hi everyone!

Thanks for the advice and tips.

We know that we will only be in this house a year, because it is a rental and we are planning on buying within the next year. The house is in Chevy Chase, MD and is the only original bungalow in a neighborhood full of giant mc-mansiony type houses. Because of this, the real estate agent said that it is almost 100% that the house will be torn down once sold next year. It is very sad.

But, on the bright side, this means we will not have to paint the walls back to white, and can do whatever we want to them. While the sheet idea is tempting, the room are for two babies, and I worry about the fire-safety of such an idea.

Again, because we will not be here long term, I am not worried about many of the issues that people have pointed out, such as the difficulty of removal and bubbling. I am also not too worried about the texture problems, since we're just going for color, not perfection.

Thus, we will be painting. We are leaning towards a chocolate brown for the 16 month old and a celery green for the 3 month old. Hopefully these will cover ok.

However, if the very old owners decide to sell to us at some ungodly rock-bottom price because they love us and our adorable children, I will be very sorry that we painted over instead of stripping!!

One of my concerns is not only the plushness, but the cost! At $6/ish a sq foot, it seems expensive... do people feel like it was a good value?

Hi everyone! Wow, I feel so honored. Thanks for all the nice comments, and I am so excited about recieving the box of goodies. Sadly, I did not make Annie's kimono. It was a gift from a friend and came wrapped in a little sushi box. So cute! For anyone who is interested, there is a tutorial for the growth chart on my blog. www.kristenunraveled.blogspot.com

Umm, this seems a little ridiculous. Choosing the Hable fabric ups the cost by $2000!!! Is it really that expensive?

For us, it wasn't the ties that were the issue, it was the risk of smothering. This was especially a concern when our baby just started to roll over, but wasn't consistently able to roll back. Our worry was that she would roll into the bumper and not be able to get out. We switched to a breathable bumper, which made us all more comfortable.

A few comments about everyone else's awesome lists.

-If you are breastfeeding, please get a "My Brest Friend" instead of a boppy. Boppys are pretty useless for breastfeeding, and despite the horrendous name, the My Brest Friend is awesome. it is supportive and straps on nice and tight.

-Also if you are breastfeeding, get the name and number of your local la leche league or lactation consultant. breastfeeding is very rewarding, but can be hard in the beginning. Having the right kind of support can make it ten times easier. Even better, attend a la leche league meeting before your birth. Then, when you're crying because of your swollen boobs, you'll know who to call :-)

-Weisbluth: You either love him or hate him. He works for some people, but other find his book a poorly organized, nonsensical nightmare. You may want to read it, but take him and any other sleep "expert" with a grain of salt. What works for one baby will be the worst thing ever for another. For some amazing common sense aleep advice check out "ask moxie" (moxie.blogs.com). FWIW, Weissbluth didn't work us and made my husband and I feel like huge sleep failures. Also, if you're opposed to crying it out ("CIO"), Weissbluth probably isn't for you.

-Boudreaux's butt Balm- amazing, nonsticky, and non-stinky diaper rash cream

-oh and get tons of washable bibs and burb cloths. the cheap kind, that you won't mind staining.

Other great fabric resources are:

superbuzzy.com (japanese imports)
sewzannesfabrics.com
bearpawquilting.com
fabrics-store.com
funkyfabrix.com
jcarolinecreative.com
fabricguru.com

as well as the stores mentioned by the other posters.

Once you figure out who makes the print it is pretty easy to find the fabric.

Many of the fabrics are printed by moda. Their website (modafabrics.com ?) has a place where you can view all of their lines, including dick and jane which is popular

Hi egriffny-

I actually didn't use a pattern. What I did was use the standard crib measurements and basically make a pattern from there. I will try to put up a post on my husband's blog tonight with more details, including measurement and stuff. For now, you can checkout more pics on our flickr page. www.flickr.com/kirbylou

hi-

I'm a self-confessed strollerjunkie. A good place to check out is the strollerqueen forums. You can join the yahoo group, and ask away about strollers. I found the group EXTREMELY helpful, and collectively ehy have driven almost every stroller out there.

In my personal experience, if you go inexpensive or lightweight, you're going to lose in terms of the jogging quality. This might not matter as much if you don't really jog, but rather use the stroller mainly for tooling around the city and walking around the park. In that case maybe a jeep or an instep might be ok.

But, if you actually jog, i think you will regret not getting a quality jogging stroller like a BabyJogger or a BOB. Both are highly rated by strollerqueen members and have a loyal following. I personally prefer the fold of the BabyJogger city series. You can find this model used on CL and also on the strollerqueen board if you don't want to cough up the money for a new one. Also check out returnsforsale.com . They often have jogging strollers for sale that are really good deals.

Brittanie-

Here is the Baby Bargains post that discusses where to obtain the glider hardware and I think also links to a page discussing how to install it.

Honestly, it didn't look that difficult and had we not found our glider on CL we probably would have gone that route. You also get the benefit of being able to pick a chair and fabric you like!

oh, also, I forgot to add that we ended up finding our upholstered glider on Craigslist. It looks brand new. We paid $250 and the chair and ottoman retail for $600 at buybuybaby.
