Wired Magazine coupon didn't work as stated - the final price was $15.99, not $4.99 as indicated above.

If the air outside is cooler than the temp inside, try this trick. In a room other than the bedroom, place a high-velocity fan so that it level with and facing out toward an open window. Open windows in your bedroom (or all rooms) and turn the fan on high. It will pull the air from the outside through the other windows and send the hot air out the window where the fan is placed. It's especially nice if you can position your bed so it's in the air flow - it feels like a fan, with air flowing over the bed. Run it for 15 to 30 minutes before bedtime, and the room will cool right down. Even if you have A/C and decide to use it, it starts the cooling process from a much lower temp, hopefully saving money.

I used to do this all the time in an apartment with windows on only one side (but in separate rooms). The air would flow around the dividing wall.

Another advantage - if the fan is placed in a window some distance from the bed, the sound isn't so loud, and you can sleep.

Once while working at a bookstore, I was ringing up a young woman's purchase. She was on her cell the entire time, didn't look at me once and basically tossed bills at me when it was time to pay. After she walked off, the 50-something gentleman behind her shook his head and stated, "She just treated you like a vending machine." I do believe he was right.

Lillstreet also has a fine display of artist-made jewelry for sale, and for those interested in learning how to make jewelry, a fabulous metals department second to none in the CHI area.

Having been around long enough to see much original MCM as unsalable garage sale items, I realize the charm of the period is the novelty and bold exploration of uncharted decorating terrority (as of that period in time, anyway). Bottom line is, can you live with it for any length of time? I think many will find, like their parents and/or grandparents, that one can tire quickly of a daily dose of statement-making pieces, regardless of how much fun they were in the beginning. Quite frankly, I love my little white kitchen with black and white tile and (yikes!!) white appliances. It's soothing, and I can hear myself think when I go in there to create.

I also got boxes from the Borders I worked at a few years ago. They're a little bit smaller and oh-so-much-easier to lift and carry than bigger boxes. It limits how many books and heavy objects you can pack in one box, and your friends and/or the packers will probably thank you. The bookstores unpack dozens of boxes each day; call ahead and have them hold them for you. Another thing I've done that has worked really well is packing soft stuff (like linens, blankets, pillows, etc.) in plastic bags, which can be stuffed in those odd-shaped leftover nooks in the truck, and can also cushion other fragile items. The bags can then be reused later (most will make it intact).

I agree with MaeEast; go for the navy and pop it with bright pillows that pick up the colors in your artwork. I'd angle the rug but not the coffee table.

I was visiting a psychiatrist friend in Lyon, France a number of years ago. During the grand tour of the city, we stopped at her office. It was understated and uncluttered. The most beautiful thing in the office was a print of a gracious, elegant floral watercolor resting on a full-sized easel, set close to the corner near a large window. It set the tone for the room - relaxed yet beautiful.

"we opened our suitcase to find our favorite white shirt had become best buds with our red lip gloss..."

I can understand a co-owned suitcase, even a co-owned white shirt, but co-owned red lip gloss? Come on, guys, quit with the cutsie pronouns and use something approaching proper English.

If they make it silver, nobody will be able to see it from 10 miles away, say Oak Park. Part of its appeal is that it can be seen from far, far away, and it creates a distinct outline on the horizon. Besides, if the Spire is ever built, the Sears Tower will no longer look unique - from a distance, they will be close in color. The Spire will dominate with its size, and the Sears Tower will look like, well, just another building.
