Hey Sam: You're right about one thing; carpenter ants LOVE wood . . . wet, rotting wood. Our wood is dry . . . almost "bone dry." and it's also out of the rain . . . So fear not . . . the ants don't get into this wood pile ;-)

appears you've managed to complement your beautiful surroundings WITHOUT creating a "maintenance monster" . . . anxious to compete with the "wood, water, and night sky" you so much enjoy. well done!

"sarashilvas" . . . we used a stone sealer on the interior stone, primarily to enhance its contrast/color. we DID apply an exterior sealer on the "ground-faced" block of our new addition, but I'm not certain that would help your stone fireplace. reading i've done suggests that "weeping" can often be caused by cracks/openings in mortar joints. if you can duplicate the weeping effect with a hose, maybe you'll discover that "repointing" some of the mortar joints will help . . . wishiknewmore ;-)

we'll do it ;-) . . . wood fired! re: sealing . . . we had to sandblast the interior, as it was rather blackened. that also gave us a chance to reveal more stone--less mortar. we DO plan to seal, but the mortar is NOT crumbly; we're fortunate in that respect. we DID seal the mortar in the living room; it enhances the stone NICELY.

"leelacyd" . . . you're welcome any time. the single greatest thing we enjoy about 80 acres, a house, a barn, guest quarters and a shop . . . is giving it over to anyone who cares to visit. cheers!

hmmmmmm . . . guess i can relate to where the "indelicate" comments are coming from, but i don't agree with them. truth is . . . MOST of us can't afford a "womb chair" or "mouille" lamp (original OR reproduction), but that's not the point of sharing information about good design. good design (mho) is about innovation, creative use of materials, proportion, etc. that said . . . these attributes are often "lurking" in many rather "pedestrian" places . . . far afield from DWR and well within the reach of a modest budget . . .
