the technical term for these hardrives is NAS (network attached storage).

besides containing a harddrive, these also come with some processor/cpu, many of them running some variation of linux. as opposed to a stand-alone harddrive, they therefore can be connected directly to your network (e.g. router) instead of to your computer. thereby they become easily available to all computers on your network. (you would probably rarely have them on you desk like in the picture of the iomega store center, but rather somewhere hidden in a closet)

some of these also include special streaming media servers to allow streaming of any media (audio/video) you have on them to certain devices (e.g. playstation)

i can recommend the hp mv2120 ( http://www.amazon.com/HP-MV2120-500GB-Media-Vault/dp/B0015313O8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1224530256&sr=1-1 ). has been working great for me so far, and can be updated with an additional hd for more storage or redundant backup. also does not require any software to be installed on your machine.

as your computer audio output doesn't produce enough power, the usual computer speakers come with a built-in amplifier (also called active speakers). same is true for all the iPod accessories/speaker systems out there. your conventional speaker on the other hand doesn't have that (passive speaker).

to use existing passive speakers, you will need to add a separate amplifier between your computer and the speakers. an existing stereo system might do, e.g. if you have an aux input. or you may need to buy a separate amplifier. any amplifier out there should probably do, but you will need to use something that does not produce more power than your speakers can handle.

(the issue with needing a couple of cables and connectors still will apply).

unfortunately the writeup doesn't fully cover daniel's approach. he considered and addressed many of the issues some of the people here commented on (e.g. use in the city, transportation of additional items).

also, from my understanding, the scooter is more of the starting point, to create a different kind of short distance transportation option. letting go of the initial (scooter fad) reaction and approaching this concept with an open mind helps ;-).

obviously though, at the same time, this kind of reaction is something he will need to address as well to make this successful.
