I love cheap dorm room fixes! When I was in school, I got chinese lanterns of different colors and hung them from the pipes. It gave it a colorful solar system look. Then I blue-tacked coins from around the world on my wall in a cool shape, which was both interesting graphically and fun souvenir-wise. Apartment Therapy Los Angeles | DIY Dorm RoomDaily Danny |

My parents just sold their house and gave me their old coffee table -- a 6-plank chest that belonged to my great-grandmother that I've always loved. They had a piece of glass cut to size for the top. We also have a "close stool" (aka. commode, aka. child's potty) that serves as a side table (with the top down, so no one is tempted to make use of the toilet seat). It makes me happy to know that I'm using things that people in my family cared about. Apartment Therapy Los Angeles | Using Family Heirlooms In Your Daily Life |

Mine's 8'x10' with a fridge and stove on one side, sink/counter on another and the other two walls have buffet/island things, both with counterspace. It's perfect for us. It's the two extra pieces of furniture that give us the workspace to have two people doing prep work at the same time. Apartment Therapy Los Angeles | AT Survey: How Large Is Your Kitchen? |

Normally I love H&M (I'm wearing their clothes right now), but these pictures aren't making me jump up and down. They're a little cluttered and I don't feel like the designs are pushing the envelope. The products look nice, but when I heard "H&M for the home," I expected something amazing. Oh well, it's probably better for my wallet this way. I have a black and white photo of my dog on the fridge, but I am considering doing a Warhol-esque multi-colored print and framing it. Because he's beautiful. Apartment Therapy Boston | Look! Hidden Bookshelf Surprise |

I love the paper lanterns over the bed! I had something like that in college, but apparently they were a "fire hazard" and they made me take them down. They remind me of the light in "The Princess and the Goblin" and make me happy. Apartment Therapy San Francisco | Cheri David's Creative Loft The Selby |

Thanks for the post! I just got an antique-ish sofa for free, but it desperately needs reupholstering and I've been working up the nerve to do it/wondering if I was insane to even think about it. This is a push in the right direction. Great job! Apartment Therapy Chicago | How To: Upholster a SofaNothin Like a Dame's February Jumpstart Project 2009 |

I like the DIY idea, but am not such a fan of the canon of religious texts idea. Sure these are some of the greats, but that shelf seems to imply that there should be no room for other religious texts. And I'm not sure that Velocity, the "Home for Modern Living" should be our source for religious texts. Also, why can't you just buy different editions of the same books that are all the same height and just get a shorter shelf, thereby presenting them all "on the same level" and in a custom shelf, but without all the gimmickry? I just went to the Kleenex website. Apparently there are people out there who feel that the best way to say "Happy Valentine's Day" is with a box of tissues. Perhaps it's meant as an accompaniment to a cry-worthy awesome gift or better yet, the old Valentine's Day, "Dear Baby, Welcome to Dumpsville. Population: you. And a box of tissues." I remember talking to a Chinese friend about feng shui when I lived in China (mainland). She thought it was crazy that westerners believe in/pay a lot of money for it. Apartment Therapy Los Angeles | Bedroom Feng Shui Melbourne |

There's another copy in Great Falls, VA and a Monticello-esque house in Oakton/Vienna. Whenever we go home (NoVA), my siblings and I have a contest to see the latest worst/best McMansion monstrosity. Beautiful, simple space. Sounds like you have a great contractor. I wonder if the living room would be more inviting if the sofas were turned 90 degrees (and move the credenza to the right-hand wall) so one didn't see the back of one upon walking into the room? (is this a design principle? i really don't know.) Apartment Therapy Los Angeles | House Tour: Rajiv's Bangalore Wabi Sabi Bangalore |

My husband and I have lived recently in Thailand and China, both of which tend to observe the "shoes off" rule in homes. In China (in my experience) people then put on slippers to walk around the house to keep their feet off dirty floors, whereas in Thailand they walk around barefoot and keep the floors immaculate. At home, my husband prefers the Thai manner, while I like the Chinese way. It reduced the amount of dirt that comes into the house and wearing slippers means that you don't notice the dirt that makes it! ;-) (i hate emoticons) Apartment Therapy Re-Nest | 37 Reasons to Take Your Shoes Off |

I think you have some really nice things in your apartment. It's a bit cluttered, but I suspect that part of the backlash has to do with your apartment not being in a cool, old building downtown with great bones and beautiful hardwood floors. Also, the kitchen cabinets are a bit dated... and for those reasons, it's not my favorite apartment (forgot to mention Anthropologie-discount jealousy - darn your cool pillows!), but I like what you've done with it. I especially love the beautiful bag by the bed and the cabinet behind it. Apartment Therapy DC | House Tour: Katie's Bohemian Abode Rosslyn, Virginia |

I agree about the surge protectors, but they're not always appropriate for the middle of the living room. In the UK, they have these switches built into the sockets that let you turn the whole thing off, so there's no need for a bulky power strip. They're cheap and easy to use. Has anyone seen them in the US? Apartment Therapy Re-Nest | Good Question: One Good, Easy Green Resolution? |

One more tip, from a textile conservator friend -- for getting bad grease stains out of clothes, use WD-40. The oils in it bind to the oils in the stain and loosen them so they come out. Spray on, then scrub (I think - it's been a while since I've done this one) and launder in the hottest water allowable for the fabric (helps liquefy the grease). I had a red chili oil stain in the middle of my favorite fancy white shirt and this got the whole thing out amazingly.
