the knife looks slightly serrated and she flips it inside out so that it gets the little ridges...brilliant

I rented a movie last week for the first time on my iMac. I was pretty satisfied, but sad to see that HD movies are only available for rental on the Apple TV. Since I use my iMac as a television, it would be nice to be able to have that option.

mr. O, I think they are premade, he has them labeled "Habitat Cherry Blossom Lights" on his flickr account.

Yeah, the poster blocking bugged me too, that's why I wondered if the TV actually moved around. And I agree jmorey, slide the whole system a few inches to the left, positioning the TV in the middle of the books would look pretty cool.

I had an air mattress, which fortunately my cat chewed through and I had an excuse to throw it away. I hated it. Facing house guests in my one bedroom apartment for 2 weeks, I thought of what I would want to sleep on if I was at someone's house for that long. The only time I've ever been comfortable overnighting at someone's house is on the couch or a spare mattress on the floor.

I purchased an inexpensive Ikea mattress for around $100. It gets stowed away when guests are not in town, and gives overnight guests a semblance of a comfortable bed. If you have somewhere to stash it, I'd recommend it any day over a bulbous air mattress. Ideally, I'd love to find an easy to store wood base to create a more elegant platform bed in the future. That is, if I ever let anyone stay at my house for that long again....

Curtis,

When do you notice the slowness? Is it slow when you're using programs that don't need the internet?

I think aghman has forgotten that I actually installed his stereo, and let me attest it was a PAIN. ;) In a Honda, it basically entails taking apart the entire center panel from the stereo all the way to the gear shift and the parking brake. Lots of plastic panels to remove and replace, and screws to remember where to put back. I'm all for doing things yourself, but check to see how difficult it is before attempting it yourself.

I recently found some chic Ikea all white designs that I can't find on their website. One featured an Orla Kiely-esque leaf pattern in relief, and there were also some simple horizontal and vertical stripes.

Beautiful! The white really sets off the details. I hadn't even noticed those in the before pics. Great job. :)

Where are you getting your information LuckyMonkey? My take on the Apple store page is that you can indeed use this as networked storage. You'll need all that you mention to take advantage of Apple's Time Machine software, but not the device itself.

I did a similar, albeit less elegant solution, when I lived in a studio. We used the drawer of the Malm unit to stash peripherals and wires. It looked nice, but was difficult to work that high, the lowered keyboard ads a nice touch.

My tip is to give yourself time, those books that seem too precious to part with right now can quickly loose their luster after awhile. I had a plethora of art and art history related books from my grad school days, and at first couldn't imagine parting with them. I moved cross-country a year ago, and left my books in storage at my parents house (near Annapolis coincidentally. ;). I find that every time I am back home, I am able to weed out more and more to donate and sell. With both time and distance between me and my books it has completely changed my perspective.

Pixie, I had the same problem about 6 months ago. Although my powerbook was a few years older. Everything just took way too long, after trying all the usual tricks I came to the conclusion that the internet had outgrown my Mac and I needed a new one.

Here are some things I tried before giving up.

Good luck!

To me, EK is all about color. His early work is often viewed as a precursor to the Colorfield painters.

I did a Kelly-esque installation of canvases using this NGA work as inspiration. Its a colorful and economical idea for covering a large wall. In this case, I think the white canvas against the darker wall has the same effect.
