Great choice of colour! And I love the mismatched handles. I've done a similar project recently with a bedroom dresser bought for $150 at an auction house. Took everything to convince my man to go with a coral colour... it looks great in our master.... he admits it ;)

I would recommend choosing a durable hardwood like Maple or Oak. We have 2 dogs, one of which is a large shedding german sheppard-lab mix. When we renovated our 1892 house last year, we had to replace the original hardwood. We chose a light brown maple because it looked beautiful, but also matched our dog's fur! Our previous place had dark chocolate hardwood and you could see every hair and spec of dirt. So the lighter colours are easier to keep clean. Maple is very hard and you can always add area rugs and a runner in high traffic areas such as the stairs and hallway. Here's a link to get the idea of hardness of different types of wood.
