ok, here's what you do.
1. move out. or
2. locate the hood exhaust. if they have a hood, (and they should if they are cooking anything... fryer, oven, griddle) then the outlet for the exhaust should be ABOVE the roof. if not its most likely a building or zoning violation.

other than that, your only other REAL option is to pressurize your apartment. this isn't all that difficult in theory, but its expensive and definitly not worth doing as a tenant.

if i were you, i'd go with no.1 and tell the landlord its not habitable, 'give me my deposit back or see you in court'

i use both the extreme and the express for sharing an external drive, sharing a printer and streaming itunes to the amp... they work well together and we do both windows and mac. streaming music never skips, printing is flawless, and the shared drive is easy...

in fact, is that a picture of your wall? because if it is and the white stuff on the brick is NOT paint then it is salt leaching out of the brick for the same reasons i just posted above... good luck.

ok... look out. if you poly the interior side of an exterior masonry wall, brick or block that is a true barrier wall then you're going to have trouble. in otherwords, if you have a solid brick wall and on the other side is the great outdoors - don't poly. depending on the climate you're in the poly will eventually delaminate. i've seen it within a single heating season in nyc.

why does this happen?

water vapor that is in the outside air migrates thru the masonry wall from the exterior and 'pushes' the poly off the brick. very ugly... and maybe hard to believe but there's a science to this. the poly creates a vapor barrier and stops the moisture at the inside face of the brick. 'so you say water vapor is stronger than the adhesion of poly to brick?' every freeze a plastic bottle of water? these are strong forces. the same principle applies to the exterior face of brick. LET IT BREATH. all this to say, i don't recommend it... and like someone else posted, the shiny stuff looks like meat. got an interior wall... go low luster to keep the dust level down. ;)

whelll don't git yer nickers all twisted by this stuff... this junk does nothing for low frequency or structure borne noise. that means footfalls, bass blasters and thumpy noises, etc. you need mass to get rid of that. in otherwords you need concrete or concrete block OR a partition that is disconnected from the opposite side. what this can do is absorb some of the higher frequencies that are already in your crib... and it might just help the tv from next door if the jerk isn't surround sounding it. this crap gimmicky, not worth the time or expense. if sound is your real enemy... move to the country. and imblebee is right too... unless your insulation is blessed by the dob's mea certification, you're proly not supposed to use it. rigid insution inside? fogadabodit. dob says its toooo flamable... oh well, gotta go... start up my grille out on the fire escape. ;)

'It might break, or it might not break. If it breaks by cracking only, so what? It might even improve the draft for the fire!'

yeh it's all great fun until hot coals rain down on some poor neighbors head. and if you're doing this on a fire escape i hope it's your apt that catches fire and you trip over the pot on the way down... buddy.
