I remember seeing a large birch log with holes drilled into it for tealights. Bits of gold leaf may have been added to it as well. It was either from Living, Etc. or "Marie Claire Idees".

One addition could be a small "vide-poche", a dish in which to empty your pocket change. Koo de Kir (www.koodekir.com) has a beautiful small porcelaine one that I have given to friends and family. It's in the shape of a ginko leaf, but is painted a beautiful bronze color. It's under $10, I believe.

One summer I worked at a pewter shop and besides the lead levels on antique pewter, also beware that at high temperatures, the pewter will warp and bend. So do not use it in the oven and do not store somewhere hot (like an attic).

Maxi:

I would velcro a piece of thick fabric on top. Perhaps felt in a color that coordinates with the kitchen. Use the top to make a paper template and save the template so you can make another if the fabric becomes too soiled. You could even cut out simple bird or flower shape in a contrasting color and glue that on top. (This could even be done with suede for a child-free home.)

Another option is to see if a plastic shower cap might fit. They come in different patterns these days and can easily be washed.

Regarding West Elm sales staff....I actually have a positive story to tell about the Boston store. I had my eye on a cube-shaped desk that swivels open and shut, but it was a little out of my price range. One day I noticed they were selling the floor models at a very low price. I talked with a sales person and asked how much it cost to have it delivered, as I don't own a car. The delivery fee was more than the cost of the desk! Long story short, the salesperson convinced the manager to give me a new, in the box, desk for the same price as the discounted floor model and then, as it was the end of her shift, the salesperson drove me home with the desk at no charge. Now that's customer service!

I'm sure this will give away the fact that I'm not a professional designer....but depending on what color the rest of the room will be, I think gold-leafing the entire mantel would be nice. The light from the fire place would dance off of the gold. There were some small gold/ Grecian andirons featured in either Domino or Blue Print recently that could be added, too.

I would use this Waverly curatin panel on sale at Target with a second rod for the plastic liner.

If you know anyone in the New England area, I've seen them at the Christmas Tree Shops.

For those in Boston:

CSN Warehouse is a great resource for inexpensive furniture. It's the warehouse for the CSN website sales. All returns are sold there at up to 70% off. There's a mix of traditional and modern, but it's potluck as to what they have there at any given time. They take cash or credit card and you must take the items away the day of purchase, they will not ship.l

Unfortunately, they're moving this summer to Dedham and I'm heartbroken. I've gotten great deals on a new kitchen table and chairs and a new pair of designer lamps. You can check out some of their items for sale on Boston's Craigslist site. Just click on furniture and search "CSN".

If you're looking for upscale barstools, this is the place for you!
