Yes, I usually make beans from scratch. BUT I realized a couple months ago, I wasn't making them as much as a vegetarian like me should, because of the time issue. Now I saute some garlic and an onion, throw in come canned tomatoes, add a bunch of cumin and other spices, toss in canned black beans, and I've got a chili in half an hour. Same recipe with garbanzo beans, with a squeezed lemon and some spinach at the end. If you haven't done the advance planning, you can still enjoy your beans. oh, p.s., the key for me was getting the colors very close in shade, so the idea wasn't overwhelming. I like this grey. Xavier Dean's Striped and Serene NurseryMy Room |

I did this in my bedroom once, with two shades of yellow. My living room was a great dark Frenchy-yellow, then you walked into the bedroom, and it was the same yellow, with a slightly lighter color as the other stripe. It was beautiful and made a small bedroom expand in size. Xavier Dean's Striped and Serene NurseryMy Room |

I live in New York, and an old lady down the street was always sitting out in front of her brownstone with her pet chicken. She said she always had one, ever since she was a little kid. She wanted a kitten or puppy but her father owned a chicken farm and brought one home for her instead, and she had one ever since. It looked pretty happy. Friendlier than my cat, who refuses to even sit near me. Apartment Therapy Los Angeles | News To Us: Pet Chickens |

My dogs (big lab mixes) have always slept on the bed. I love their big solid bodies, very comforting. Cats, too. My last dog just died, but while she was alive, I took in a cat that hates dogs. The cat would hiss at her, scratch her--blood everywhere. Except on the bed. While on the bed, they'd practically sleep back-to-back and the cat wouldn't notice. I've realized since then that whoever I have in the house (I foster stray cats until I can find them homes) the bed is some weird demilitarized zone, everyone lays down their grudges and is at peace there. Do you know you can paint those electric registers to match the walls? Just use a roller brush and go right over them, it works great. I rent and have the same colored walls and the same annoying electric registers. Painted, they blend right into the wall. Apartment Therapy New York | ColorTherapy: Chamois |

alternative to the sticky brush is go to the hardware store and get a roll of 3" wide masking tape. You can use it like a towel behind you to get your back, the back of your pants, etc. Still something to throw in the trash, yes, but more economical. I'm both a freelance art director and a novelist. For the former I have to work at home, but when I write, I've started using the reading room at the NY Public Library downtown. (The one with the lions, but I guess any one would do.) The tables are at an uncomfortable height for typing, but otherwise, I can plug in, it's super quiet and I'm surrounded by people working--lots of company, no cell phones allowed. And no internet. It's great. Apartment Therapy San Francisco | Establishing a Creative SpaceDomino Magazine |

Thanks for the plug, Wnyken, but, uh, you're my mom. (That's what I get teaching her to use the computer.) AT, thanks for mentioning Here Be Old Things in the same post as the Times article. The Brooklyn Flea is a great idea and I can't wait for next Sunday. I really hope it's a success. Apartment Therapy New York | New York Flea Market SeasonThe New York Times 3.30.08 |

I need a coffee table exactly like that. Can you tell me where you got it, or what the style is called? It looks like a shorter version of something traditional. Apartment Therapy New York | House Tour: Brian's New Beginning |

This is fantastic, and I can't wait for it to open. FYI, for people who like to shop fleas, there's a lot of outdated info on the internet, but I have an up-to-date list of the fleas in NYC on my site Here Be Old Things. I took the 4 week class at The Furniture Joint and it was the best $400 I ever spent, because it convinced me never, ever to attempt reupholstering by myself. The class doesn't really teach you in a meaningful way to do a job, just because there's so you'd need to master and 4 sessions isn't enough to really acquire the skills, but it did impress on me 1. how highly skilled you need to be to do this work and 2. how poorly home tools preform against the expensive professional equipment. (For instance, a hand-held staple gun would never be adequate compared to the high-pressure equipment FJ has.) This chair is just cushions so there's no ripping and tearing and re-webbing etc., but ... I'm just saying. The pros know what they're doing. Good Questions: Is DIY Reupholstering Recommended? |

my biggest problem with all writing/computer desks is that they're too high. A good typing surface is about 28-29", and desks are usually 30", some a bit more. And I'm tall. I confirmed my suspicians with an erogonomics expert that CondeNast hires to advise workers on their desk set-ups. I hate those fold-out keyboard trays--usually not enough room--and have thought about buying an old table and cutting down the legs, but then there's always an issue of the armature under the table hitting my legs ... can you tell I've been looking a long time and am frustrated? I'm checking out the build it yourself option, as per Scott B. Top 10: Writing Desks |
