Thank you so much for that link! I'm in Pasadena as well and we too rent and have a chimney that is just a big open column to the sky. I knew about the restrictions on using the fireplace on bad air quality days, but wasn't sure how I was supposed to know when the air quality was too bad to use the fireplace.

We have a somewhat large living room but also serves as my sewing area. We also have not moved out of the dorm room furniture phase (dos futons) and the room needs to be painted badly in the worst way possible (it's a pale pink). help!

i've used navel jelly (find at a hardware/auto supply store and is a bright bubble gum pink color) but i'm not sure what the environmental impacts are.

a quick search came up with this stuff but it might be a bit more than you need.

There are no lights on our street so we do keep the porch light on with a compact fluorescent bulb.

Looks like one of those mirrors people put at the end of their driveway so they can see better when backing out onto a busy street. Don't they sell those at the hardware store? And then put a nice round frame around it. Could be a nice DIY project.

Couldn't you use a step stool to get in after it fills up?

I wonder if there is any difference in how much water this uses vs a traditional bath.

I would rather sit in this thing and have my entire body covered than be half way lying down with my knees sticking out but I guess it depends on how big you tub is.

Hey Johnny Full Pint,

I'm across the street from San Marino. And is that beer site yours or just a fan? My husband and, subsequently, I are into the microbrews. We're hopheads and planned our honeymoon tour of the PacNW around breweries for my husband and fabric shops for moi.

We have a green bathroom, too—circa 1950s.

There are photos of our house's other vintage wallpaper as well. Our landlord is very opposed to change so we just live with it. But the rent is cheap and in a nice neighborhood so we don't mind.

We just bought one of these a couple days ago. Same brand but we opted for the $99 shiatsu model instead. (Less than that with the 20% coupon at BedBath&Beyond.) It's awesome!!!

Theodore Paine does a great native plants tour usually a weekend in late April. One day in the pasadena area the other is more westside. great way to get ideas.

for san diego and san luis obispo counties:

poorly designed site but pretty informative with it's list of plants that grow well in each zip code.

kill your lawns......plant natives or veggies instead :)

Does anyone have a solution for possums or rats or squirrels (I'm not sure which are the problem)? They are enjoying feasting on our tomatoes. I've tried cayenne, amonia, and we just set a havaheart trap last night that they were able to steal the treat without setting off the trap. :(

Has anyone tried the window film? We don't have AC but since our house in concrete it stays relatively cool as long as we keep the sun out. These would definately help out if they work.

If you have a waterhogging lawn, please consider tearing out it or reducing the size of it and replace with native plants.

If you are in the Santa Monica area check out the two houses on the south side of SMC's campus. One house is planted the traditional American ideal with nonnatives and the other with natives. The difference in water usage is astounding.

That pottery ranch place has been having the same "everything must go" sale for months. We were there last August and had the same sign but their inventory never seems to go down. I find it slightly suspicious but I could be wrong. I haven't been by in awhile.
