It's funny, when my boyfriend moved out of the house, my mother was the one who gave me much of the same advice as above. I remember there being a spot where his bookshelf used to be and suddenly that wall seemed so empty and alone. When I told her I wanted to put a mirror in that spot...what was my mothers advice? Grieve the void, don't fill the house with more stuff. We cleaned the whole house and a couple of months later, I re-painted it. And like any loss, time passed and the home felt more like "mine" and less like "ours" :)

Maybe all black and the parts that are darker brown you can do them in white? It'll take some time, but I'm sure the end result will look really cool and modern.
