Great idea to paint cabinets, walls and change out light fixture and hardware-inexpensive fixes to buy you time until you can change out appliances and countertops/backsplash. I like the idea of the soft grey walls as well-a warm grey would work in Seattle. You'll get a lot of reflective light from the cabinets for the grey days. Remove the cabinet doors to paint on a level surface, sand and use a primer that softens the cabinet varnish (ask your paint store for advise), use an enamel paint and apply with a roller for smoothest finish. I once painted cabinets, (avocado green) appliances and linoleum floor in a kitchen. The floor was the only thing needing periodic touchups, and that was with 3 kids.
