I'd personally have a hard time painting over such nice wood. Also, I'm all about doing the most for the least, and painting cabinets can be hard work. I would suggest:

1. Start by painting the trim and ceiling bright white. White or a soft gray would work well on the walls.

2. Replace the lighting fixture.

3. Replace the cabinet hardware.

If it still feels too country, THEN paint the cabinets white. I would even consider replacing the counter tops with something more mod before painting the cabinets. In a nutshell, make changes that require the least amount of work FIRST and see how it evolves.
