How about building flower boxes along the fence and planting perrenials? This would be relatively inexpensive and easy to maintain. It would be great if you could also convert the ranch style fence to something more private, and then add flower boxes to that side too, or even plant a hedge. Otherwise, buy some big planters and plant some lush, vibrant flowers. You can take those with you when you leave, but enjoy them in the meantime. I also agree with RachelMD24 on the twinkle lights. You got a great tree that could use a little bling :)

I always find it sad that people spend so much time and money on tile, which often ends up looking dated very quickly (referring to the "before" shot). The "after" is gorgeous and I absolutely love the wall colour.

Congrats! Your question is huge, but here are a couple of thoughts:

-If you have a cat, it's sometimes helpful to introduce them to one room for a day before letting them out to explore the entire apartment/house. They get really anxious in new places.

-My partner and I moved in together about 6 months ago. I think my advice would be to take a little time and figure out how you use the space before you start drilling holes :) Furniture is pretty easy to rearrange, so find a configuration you like and then decorate around it.

-One of the first meals I made was a picnic. Some cold salads and sandwiches on a blanket on the living room floor.

Have fun :D

You've managed to update it with a fresh colour palette and still pay homage to its retro-ness. It looks so fresh and cheery...great job :)

I love this thing! I agree that the hardware is amazing and should stay. Give the piece a bit of a sanding with some fine grit paper and a couple good coats of paint. White could be nice, but it's such a neat piece of , why not make it pop by painting it something bright? What ever colour you choose to paint it, you could also take out those "screens" in the door and spruce them up with a contrasting coat of paint, or with a printed fabric.

Ooh! This looks like a fun project, for real :) Here are my thoughts:
1) Paint all of the cabinets a nice crisp white. If the all-white look is a bit too much, try painting the bottom cabinets a different color, maybe cornflower blue. There are some great ideas about painting upper and lower cabinets different colors here: http://www.centsationalgirl.com/2012/10/upper-lower-versus-inner-outer/?pfstyle=wp
2)Go with some brushed steel handles. Longer handles can really add a more modern feel (like these, but silver:http://www.homedepot.ca/product/oil-rubbed-bronze-bar-pull-128mm-center/970342)
3) Paint the walls light grey.CIL has a pre-mixed that I have used throughout my living and dining areas. It's called Universal Grey and is worth checking out.
