I cannot express how much I love this after

I think you could go with a crisp white, if that's what you like, or you could go for a bright color- just make sure it's a very clear bright- no brown tones.

I recently painted my living room a very pale steel-blue, which opens up the space so much more than the builder's original khaki.

Could you put a slipcover over the blue sofa, perhaps.

I don't think your rug needs to go, unless you don't like it, or find something you prefer. Maybe play with the placement- under sofa legs or not? how far? etc. See what feels right in your space.

One of the things I love about my mother is that while she may not agree with all of my style choices, she respects them. She's always on the lookout for things she knows I'll like (I'm a grad student with very little discretionary spending- and this is my first home), and she's a great sounding board for decor choices.

Example: she thought painting my kitchen backsplash area a dark charcoal gray wasn't going to be a good idea, but after I did it, she was really complementary.

I like to customize the tunes for what I'm cooking. For example, last week when I made madeleines and chocolate sables, I listened to Carla Bruni's "Quelqu'un m'a dit." If it's more casual or fun, I like to go for 80s-90s rock.

I wish I owned those two pieces so I could juxtapose them in my space. A marvelous combination.

One of my favorite things about Paris and the rest of France is the juxtaposition of old and new. As an American, I'm so used to treating old architecture like a museum, but the French really live with/in it.

I'm reminded of a FNAC (basically Best Buy + Barnes and Noble) located inside a beautiful 200-year-old building that I frequented while living in Nantes. The outside was barely changed over all those years, with the grand entryway complete with columns and facade, but the interior was 3 stories of technology and books.

Perhaps it's thanks to the nonstick coating on my madeleine pan, or my own laziness, but i never wash and rebutter the thing before adding a new batch. I slip the fresh madeleines out, run cold water over the underside of the pan and pop it in the freezer to return to baseline cold.

They always turn out fine for me. (it seems like kind of a waste to keep multiples of what is most definitely specialty bakeware... unless you use it like, weekly)

Could you treat your dining table as part of your living room arrangement? Perhaps as an accent table or something near your new couch, and place a couple of dining chairs strategically either at the table or in the room somewhere. I know it's a little large for that kind of setup, but you could style it so that it looks intentionally different, perhaps.

I particularly like the idea of having at least a couple of pieces roll, so you could rearrange for a dinner party or something.

I agree that a desk seems like it would crowd the space significantly, unless it served a dual purpose of some kind.

You might try something like starting with the sofa in the bottom right-hand corner and build around that.

Ha! This isn't so much a tech moment, but every time they shock somebody who's flat-lining on TV, and suddenly they have a heart rhythm, I want to call some producers.

There is nothing in science that would allow the defibrillator to bring a person back if they're truly flatlining, but the whole world seems to think that's what you're supposed to do.

If it were me, I would paint the two parallel walls your white, but choose a really wonderful, punchy color that I really love (and that shows up in a small way somewhere else) for that paneled wall with the window. Maybe the magenta from the bedroom? Just because I would smile every time I went down the stairs.

Also, a different/less noticeable handrail.

Another vote for the coffee-flavored ones with the chocolate chips! These are basically the only individually-packaged foods I keep in my kitchen, and they're certainly not for breakfast, but as an occasional quick dessert, bring it on.

This nursery is absolutely gorgeous.

I mean this in no way as a criticism of the parents involved in putting together this beautiful room (or any of the other lovely nursery tours on AT); however, the most current guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatrics strongly advise against using crib bumpers, as there is a suffocation risk. Do people take them out when they put their babies in the cribs?

I don't want to be a debbie downer (and I'm certainly not trying to call anyone a bad parent, here), but I worry about this with just about every nursery tour I see here.

I hope I'm reading this right but could you convert the built out balcony to the closet? Maybe if you gave up a few feet of the main room it would still be a decent size and then you could reclaim the bathroom. I'm not a designer of any kind but this seems like the easiest solution to me.

I have this one: http://www.bamboobottleco.com/about-our-unbreakable-water-bottle/
with the classic top- just screw off and drink directly from the bottle's wide mouth. I love it, and the protection of the bamboo around it. Also, the glass and plastic components pop in my dishwasher.
This doubles as my travel mug, too!

given the number of times I was scolded growing up about dragging chair legs across wood floors at home (don't scratch the floors!), this seems like a brilliant idea to me. Of course, you have to wash them (I suppose?) and they may or may not end up being tacky, depending on your decor choices.

I agree with the above poster re: the roman shade. I think that would be a nice, practical, polished way to treat this window. I would choose a bold print that you love, or an interesting solid, maybe (depending on your taste).

My vote is for a peacock-y blue with some sheen, although i can't quite tell what color the chair is, so maybe play with some choices. also, i would nix the side table for something with a cleaner profile.

what a fun nook to read a book!
