Hi Vesper this depends on why the house flooded and what kind of insurance you have. It could be they pay nothing or they could pay replacement value. We had a fire a year and a half ago and almost everything in the house was destroyed. The insurance company was pretty accurate in identifying solid wood furniture vs particleboard and reimbursing us accordingly, but they depreciate like crazy depending on age. Sixties furniture to them was just old, not vintage. We had to price everything and then negotiate with them, and without receipts it was extremely difficult. If you are really concerned about this you need to inventory your stuff with photos, date you bought it, and the price, and keep the info online or in a couple of places. I'm starting to use a program called Nest Egg in case of future disasters. Ilene

The wood trim in our house changed the color of every paint sample I tried. Who knew? Because we added a slight amount of red to the golden oak stain to match an old staircase, every color started looking green. We ended up with Linen White (over my dead body, I said) but it looks terrific. Surprise!

Check the basement! I used to be a phone installer and you would not believe what goes on in some basements of otherwise lovely buildings. If the basement is a filthy mess it is a tip-off that nothing else is being taken care of either.

Also look for dry rot in wooden furniture. I once bought a bureau that literally fell apart as I was carrying it out to the car. Another hard-earned lesson! On the other hand I have found several badly painted antique bureaus that shaped up beautifully after refinishing.

The Ten Commandments of Used Furniture

In the fall of 2011 we had a fire at our weekend house and we lost most of our books, CDs, and DVDs. All my fiction, mysteries, sic fi, knitting books (and yarn), almost all our cookbooks. I really miss them and I would never have been able to get rid of them if it was up to me.
The main thing I have figured out is that we do not have to replace our cookbooks or CDs. I am using an app called Paprika to find and save the recipes I used most often, and to search for new ones. My family gave us a few basic cookbooks and I think we can stay with that. Almost everything is available online.
Our CDs fortunately were mostly already on iTunes and we bought a new mini-system that streams Internet radio and Pandora, and also plays CDs and the iPod. I am trying to be very disciplined about buying any physical CDs that I can download. Same with fiction--even though I don't like reading online as much I am trying to rely on downloading and on the library.
This is a very hard adjustment since I have been a book collector since childhood, but I had to face the reality that life can go on without having your books to look at all the time.
I am almost ready to start weeding out the piles of books still left in the apartment!
