Nice job, Monika. I would love to see more of these kinds of features on the sight. Good luck with the tryout. Apartment Therapy San Francisco | How To: Make Custom Magazine Files |

I loved everything about this renovation, but one thing: I would have switched the living room with the dining area. The way it's set up you have to go through the living room from the kitchen. Apartment Therapy New York | Alphabet City Budget Renovation The New York Times 12.31.08 |

He's a tip: lining the counter or table under a cutting with a thick newspaper when cutting up or dressing a chicken. it makes clean up a lot easier afterward. you still need to clean thoroughly after a chicken or any fowl, but it's ten times easier when you can roll up and throw away the newspaper. I happened to pop in to the store once when they had a sale and bought the paint for my rental. White for the walls -- no comments -- and grey for the molding. The way the sunshines in these rooms is just spectacular. Apartment Therapy - Marston Langinger Premium Paints |

I agree with doppelganger. Do nothing! Don't clutter up the space with a table, don't put anything up on the wall. It's a beautiful, clean space and should remain that way. Apartment Therapy - Good Questions: What Should I Do With This Slanted Wall? |

Hmm. I agree about getting rid of all those small tschokes on the mantel. I like that idea of the mirror above the fireplace. Something big and dramatic. Or a big colorful, framed, poster. Apartment Therapy - Good Questions: The Best Layout for Our Living Room? |

Nice large space. The problem is you've created only one seating area, around the television. It looks like a frat house. Here are some suggestions. Apartment Therapy - Good Questions: The Best Layout for Our Living Room? |

I love how clean and inviting your kitchen is. I think the hints for the color are in the picture and your story about the coffee pot. You can easily go Southern Italian with an earthly yellow, like ocher, that will give the kitchen color and keep it bright and welcoming. Or you can go with the red of the apron and the teapot, maybe slightly washed out so it won't overwhelm. But my first instinct is the ocher. Go Italian. I live in a second-floor apartment in a brownstone in Brooklyn. I turned one of the two middle rooms into a dining room/library with floor to ceiling bookshelves on both of the long walls for under $300. I find the bookshelf standards and brackets from Ikea to be the best value. The standards at Home Depot and those other stores have are expensive and have double columns of holes which is overkill. Then I have the wood shelves cut to size. I spent hours growing through the pine shelves at Home Depot to find the ones with the least knots and splintering. I've done the same thing at all the apartments I've lived, installing shelves all the way to the ceiling, and have even done it for friends. Everyone loves them. I do it because I hate store bought cases -- I can't stand all that empty space on top of them. These shelves I installed have essentially become my signature design thing where ever I've lived. Replacing those those cabinets and shelves would be like burning money. They're fine and look to be in good shape, too. Sand them and paint them -- but stay away from dark colors or you'll turn a light and bright space into a cave. The walls behind the shelves above the sink and the stove should be painted the same color as the shelves. Inside the lower cabinets install those heavyweight stainless pull out drawers/baskets they sell at places like The Container store to maximize space. The floor also looks to be in good shape. As for the refrigerator, I also would consider one of those under counter refrigerators. I don't understand why everyone in Europe has small refrigerators and our refrigerators seem to get bigger and more wasteful by the decade. Once you get a smaller refrigerator you can install shelves for a pantry above it. Congratulations on your new home. Apartment Therapy - Good Questions: How Can I Make My Kitchen Work? |

Borrowing a cat really is the only solution that will definitely work. In the early Spring when it got warm then cold again mice started appearing in my kitchen at night. It totally freaked me out. I borrowed my landlady's cat. She immediately sniffed out where they were coming from under the kitchen radiator, and waited there until they came out. Over two days she caught five small mice and the infestation was over. It was actually wild watching the way she would tease them, grabbing them, letting them go, grabbing them, taking them into her mouth, letting them go, then punching them down, until I could pick it up and throw it away. I'm not a cat fan, but after that, I must give them their due. Apartment Therapy - Good Questions: What's the Best Way to Catch a Mouse? |

Actually, some of you got it right. As recently as early in the last century, people didn't wash their clothes as often-- just think about the labor involved then -- so closests were built with vents and even windows to air out clothes. In LA, closet windows in old houses are very common. Good Questions: What is This Thing in My Closet? |

If the closet is tall, I would suggest having at least two rods instead of the traditional one, and possible a shelf. One rod closets just make no sense for me; I always change that situation when I move into a new apartment. Good Question: Small Bedroom Solutions |

I went up there once a couple of years ago while waiting to pick someone up at the airport, and it was very plastic, and had loud annoying music blasting throughout. I couldn't get out of there fast enough. It was a real shame. It would have been an ideal place to hide-out for awhile and relax, but instead it left me tense and anxious.
