I have come a long way by using a label for a certain type of book: they are "ego books". That 500 page hardback on Macarthyism I've never read nor never will read but want people to think I have read a 500 page book on Macarthyism? Yep, that's an ego book. There are some obvious ones and some less obvious ones, but understanding that some books continue to be there only to serve my ego is a big boost in helping heft them out: and are perfect for libaries.
