I have often bought plants in bloom or late in the planting season when they are pot-bound and discounted at the nursery and they have gone on to do well. You will need to carefully prune them; sometimes ruthlessly cutting back promotes excellent future growth.

Adachamoun, my sister and I used to have a massive balcony garden in Ottawa and what we found about planters is that drainage is very important. Packing peanuts at the bottom of your window box or pot are good for this purpose. In our larger planters, we used 2 litre pop bottles cut in half and arranged on the bottom. Several of the magazines and books we had about container gardening said that it was perfectly okay to over-crowd and we did that - mostly with flowers. Nothing seemed to suffer from it. Depending on how the wind blows where you are (we had an L-shaped balcony and the point was at due north so the wind HOWLED), you may have to water more often.

ClaireNY and Kristisz, those are from Ikea.

i have a long narrow space with 3 doors and it's very dark; it's also pale pink and i am NOT a pale pink person!

does anyone have ideas for umbrella storage? i have an umbrella stand for my cane, umbrellas and collection of parasols that take up space under my coat rack that could be used for a small bench.

Furnishing the Family Room: How Did Kids Alter Your Choices?

when i moved from Ottawa 6 years ago, i spent a long time standing on the balcony before i left my apartment one last time. even though it was February 27th and bitterly cold in the wind whipping down from the Gatineaus, the sky was clear and the Rideau Canal was crowded with skaters. i looked out over that view that i LOVED from my 19th floor aerie with the flag atop Parliament snapping in the wind and finally tore myself away from it.

i've never been back to the city.

even though i've been able to become a home owner here in London (Canada) where house prices are low compared to Ottawa and Toronto, that view stays with me.

My uncle LOVES his "biscuits", so my sister and I always make him a big batch of shortbreads and other goodies for xmas. This year, I'm also whipping up a bunch of kolatis for my boyfriend for orthodox xmas on Jan. 7th.

i'll be switching out the wreath on the front door this weekend, but the tree will wait for another couple of weeks and stays up until after my "real" xmas in January.

i got my white tree on sale last year at Sears on December 29th and immediately put it up because i also celebrate xmas on January 7th.

unlike the rooms shown above, my living room is painted orange and the tree just glows against the walls. i loaded it up with turquoise, hot pink, lime green and purple decorations. this year i got a feathered peacock from ChristmasCentral.com to use as a topper.

after seeing all those, i'm impatient to get my tree up... but i'll be good and wait for December!

Alas, I live in a small Canadian city where the nearest Ikea and/or Crate & Barrell are 90 minutes away (or more should I choose to go to Detroit).

And bargain booze is non-existent on this side of the border... :-(
