Reading this is depressing me because we are dying to buy a house to get away from crazy landlords, but can't afford the high prices here in So Cal.

I've had good and bad landlords; our current guy is not my favorite, but OK. He's a cheapskate, and every time he comes to repair things, his first assumption is that we've broken it. But once he sees it's not our fault (it never is!), he fixes it without complaint. He lets us paint the rooms any color we like, and our rent is very low for our area (great schools, great yard, we can have a dog). But the nicest part is that he has NEVER raised our rent, and we've lived here for four years. So that keeps us pretty happy :-)

MelTown - Yes!!! The constant complainers!! I have a relative who posts scathing commentaries about everyone he meets (coworkers, bosses, people on the bus, etc) - and has no compunction about pointing out that he's smarter, more organized, better dressed, etc. than them. It's embarassing!

And what's funny is, his sister does it, too! I had to hide both of them from my feed. They've actually proven that complaining like that on FB doesn't garner sympathy from your friends - in fact, it has the exact opposite effect.

I agree with everything everybody above said! I think one thing that has helped me is I only allow real friends on my FB - I don't let work colleagues on there, and I don't let acquaintances on there.

What astonished me recently is that during election season, I had to hide a bunch of my friends who are on my side, politically. I found a lot of their posts rude and offensive to anyone who didn't agree with them. (I'm sure this happened on the other side, too). And that made me like them less. It's still a free country, and just because someone has opposing views (unless they're racist, etc), doesn't make them a bad person. I got so tired of it, I hid all those people and actually don't think I'll unhide them. What's astounding is, a lot of them are entrepreneurs, artists, musicians, etc., who have a TON of people reading their posts, including potential clients. Aren't they afraid of turning off these people, and impacting their business?

These are wonderful books. And if you like them, you should read the books by her daughter, Rose Wilder Lane, that are beautifully written as well!

I agree with every single person who posted above me! Thanks SO much. I was feeling down about our rental house, and it already looks so much better. I love having people over anyway, but it will be even more fun when they see the changes we've made!

The master list was one of the biggest helps - thanks for everything! PLEASE can we do a mini-Cure in the summer?

Thanks for reminding me about Chanel Vamp! I used to wear that all the time - I remember my very conventional MIL disapproved, until we went out to eat in L.A. (where I live), and she saw that a lot of young women my age were wearing it. Suddenly, it became OK! :-)

The Cure got thrown off course for us when my DH and I both caught a terrible virus - he's been sick two weeks, and I've been sick one. Now our 12 year old has it, too. BUT - we donated 5 bags of stuff to Goodwill, gave some little kid board games and DVDs away to cute little kiddos, and got a hell of a lot of other things accomplished! And just coming together and writing down our goals and getting ideas was a big step forward! I've pinned every day of the CURE to pinterest, and will revisit it again and again.

Janel, PLEASE do a Summer Cure! :-)

Day 19: Catch Up & Take a Photo Apartment Therapy January Cure

My bedroom was THE project for the month. So far, we got the closet, my dresser and husband's beside table cleaned out. Then we both got sick :-(. But this week, my husband promises to clean out his dresser and then - da DAH - we made the big decision to get rid of both of our dressers and install Pax Wardrobes on either side of our bed instead! We have a tiny bedroom (gave the kids the big one, since they play in there), and I think this will free up space. Right now, both dressers are on "my" wall and I have to squeeze by them to get to bed. We don't plan on staying in this rental for much longer, but it's been 3 years already and still no house that we can afford (L.A.!), so might as well make this one nice.

And re: all the people writing about presents, whenever I've decluttered, two-thirds of the stuff I give away is presents. I finally started doing what an earlier poster said - the second I get something I don't like, I write a gracious thank you note for it, and then give it away IMMEDIATELY so it doesn't make a home in my house. Luckily, most of our relatives live out of state, and if they come to visit and inquire, I can always say "It broke during our last earthquake :-(."

And, so I don't do the same to them, I only give food or floral gifts from now on!

Day 13: Weekend Chores - Flowers & Bedroom Apartment Therapy January Cure
1/21/13 9:49 AM

Htrain - I know! I've been freezing all week, and now that the weather's nice, I can let some fresh air in and turn the heat off! We Angelenos (says this Michigan transplant) aren't used to this weather!

In any case, I didn't read the calendar in time to know that this was coming up, so I did my big closet and dresser purge last weekend as it's my BIG project for the Cure! But my husband's dresser and nightstand still need to be cleaned, and we need to wash our walls so we can paint our bedroom and get some nice shades installed. Our bedroom hasn't been nice in years, so my big thing this january/february is to make it a sanctuary.

Problem: It's tiny and we're renting, so don't want to invest too much in new furniture/paint, etc. On the other hand, we were only supposed to live here a year and now it's been 3 (!!), so maybe spending the money would be worth it?

We do this quite a bit in our house (no cable helps!) but will do again tonight for sure!

Day 11: Try a Media Fast Apartment Therapy January Cure
1/16/13 10:00 AM

My big project for the month is my bedroom. It puts a serious damper on our romantic life! Somehow, in our tiny house, our bedroom has become the place we stash things when people drop by, etc., so it's messy.

My husband was enthusiastic, so we went nutso Saturday and managed to clean out our closet and my dresser. It was hard to get rid of some beautiful clothes, but I had to - some of them I hadn't worn in three years, but kept thinking I would. But now some lucky person will find a lot of great clothes at our local Goodwill this weekend! And board games!

I didn't have time for a big clean on the kitchen, but I did the most important thing and scrubbed down and organized the fridge & freezer. It's a thing of beauty now :-) This weekend, we'll vacuum the coils. I always forget to do that.

So nice to have this kick in the butt to get things done!

Day 10: Work on Your Goal Project Apartment Therapy January Cure

Luckily for me, I went crazy cleaning and organizing my kitchen before my Mom visited at Thanksgiving! But I still have some holiday things I need to move out of there (silver platters and stuff that I only use at Thanskgiving and Xmas), and the fridge and under counter storage could definitely use a cleanup! Thanks for the motivation!

Day 8: Weekend Chores - Flowers, Kitchen Cleaning & Make Yourself a Meal Apartment Therapy January Cure
1/11/13 10:53 AM

We have people over all the time, and one of my New Year's Resolutions was to take a break so we could get caught up financially and house-organization-wise! So instead of having a big party, I'm going to invite over a couple I know and like, and we'll eat dinner & watch the BBC show "Look Around You", which I know they would LOVE!
