Soundproofing board which is sold at lumbar yards in 4 x 8 sheets for about 15.00 is a cheap and easy to cover with fabric and makes a great bulletin board too. I used a partial sheet in my daughter's college apartment. Plain white walls, cottage cheese ceilings and ugly brown carpeting disappeared a bit with a hot pink print on the wall over her desk. The board has now moved to a college house (no cottage cheese ceilings but white walls and brown carpet) but it adds a nice pop of color and makes the room more personable. Wall decals have also been great in the same situations. Her dorm room walls her freshman year were painted cinderblock so nothing could be tacked to the walls but she added flower decals to the walls and it helped a bit.

Been on a big purge since the end of July when my husband of 24 years decided to quit me and my kids. I moved 35 boxes of his things (plus lots of tools and clothing) into the front yard with help from 3 great friends.
It's been very difficult but I think good in the long run.Hard to remember that every day but I am making progress.
I keep a box or bag or just a small pile in a hallway at all times. I'll make a donation trip for only a bag or two, just to move it out. My husband was a collector of many things. He believed that if one of something was good then 7 or 8 was even better.Since he left, I have been able to get rid of 3 book shelves and a huge computer armoire.
I have never been much of a pack rat although I do find it's easier to just shove things in a closet then actually go through them. It helps that I live in under 1400 square feet (family of four/now three) with no garage. Been here for 18 years so always trying to keep the extra's in check. Those TV shows on hoarders actually make me anxious! I'm not the queen of clean but I do like the uncluttered look that I have now. Still going through the baskets from the computer desk. Also need to tackle my sewing closet. I have a lot of fabric that I find hard to part with. As long as it all fits in to the boxes on the shelves, I may keep it.
Looking forward to 2013 as a clean slate. I turn 50 in the summer and hope to have my head and my house in better shape then ever!
