My advice is to not read this comment section. Ha! My thought on breastfeeding is that it's worth giving it a go, but don't feel bad if it doesn't work out. You might hate it, but I breastfed my daughter for fourteen months (we just weaned this week) and I LOVED it. It's definitely worth finding out for yourself.

My other advice is not to buy a ton of stuff. You can always run to Target if you find you need something (or use Amazon Prime...no need to even leave the house), but in the beginning the basics are enough. Diapers, blankets, a place to set the baby down, a carseat, and a good wrap/sling are all that you need. Spend your time/money on filling your freezer with easy meals instead.

I guess I fall somewhere in the middle, but I think that's by virtue of the city where I live. I'm 30, married with one kid, and hoping to add one or two more soon. My husband and I are both professionals, and we live in a fairly large single family home in Houston. Living in a large city with terrible public transportation, but somewhat cheap housing gives us a good mix of urban amenities with a homey neighborhood. What I do know is if I lived in another city I would move to a shoebox in the city before I would move to the 'burbs and I wouldn't live in the suburbs of Houston either. I really don't want my kid to grow up in the bland bubble that I lived in as a child, but I also think that as a generation where both parents work (at least more so than previous generations), it means a lot to work near your home. I don't want to waste two hours every day in Houston traffic when I could be spending that time with my kid.

I have one in my daughter's room now, on our glider. I put it there to help hide the hideous beast that is our free chair, but it turns out to be great lumbar support during nursing too. Now that she's a young toddler I've been keeping an eye out for more fun pillows for her room. Her sweet soothing nursery is starting to feel a bit boring, and now I want to add some color and throw pillows are a safe, easy addition to her room. Plus she can use them to read on the floor, or play with, or whatever her little mind can come up with.

I just dim the lights and light a few candles. If you can't see the dirt it's like it's not even there!

I do this constantly and it drives my husband nuts! We have half finished projects all over the house. I love it though because it makes me feel like i'm accomplishing something, even if it's not altogether true.

Brighten up the paint color a bit to a light gray (maybe with a bluish tint), black shutters upstairs. Paint the front door emerald green. Window boxes down stairs with something cheery in them. Replace the railing if possible, maybe add railing to the other side of the stoop. Paint the trim super white.

Hot water with lemon and a big, fat, greasy breakfast taco. I turn 30 on Friday and I've spend the past two years pregnant/breastfeeding so if there was ever a time for a hangover it's this weekend. I think I should probably take notes on this post and the comments section :)

I'm also a newbie. Better Homes and Gardens has really helped me out. You can go to their website and put in your zipcode and it will tell you your zone and what plants will grow there. Then you can brows the plants and it will tell you if they need sun, shade, etc. I haven't gotten far yet, but I feel much more confident.

I know photos can be deceiving, but it looks like you have the space for two focal areas. Why not make one part of the room a TV/media area, and make a second sitting area by the fireplace? I'm picturing bookshelves next to the stairs (under the bannister), a cozy loveseat, a coffee table (if you can fit it and still easily get to the stairs. Maybe even a bar cart next to the fireplace. You might still have room for a sectional facing the other way so you can curl up and watch TV.

Are the hats above the bed intentionally supposed to look like nipples? If so, may I just say that I find that hilarious/awesome. If not, please forgive me for being a child.

Your home is lovely. It looks like a fun place to hang out.

My daughter had the IKEA gym because I didn't want plastic and I didn't want to spend a lot. She LOVED it. I can't recommend it enough. Actually, IKEA toys in genral are great. They're inexpensive, but not cheap plastic and they're quirky. Even my daughter's lovie is from there. Of all her sweet stuffed animals she fixated on a rat. Go figure.

I think they're fun, although I agree that eating a face seems a bit creepy, and there's no way I could manage to make most of these. My toddler is definitely having her Easter lunch served in eggs though. That is so cute.

"We also include less weighty, but still important quality-of-life issues like commute times and weather..." Chicago certainly has its perks, but when I lived there I was MISERABLE. The weather there will really get you down, espcially this time of year. I live in Houston now and I'm 100 times happier. The commute is still brutal, but you don't mind it so much when the sun is shining! The whole attitude in sunnier climates is different, so I can see how the Midwest took a beating.
