Small Space Inspiration: Life on a Boat

I live in an apartment building consisting of 21 units. There is a common fenced in area shared in back by all apartments. When I first moved in a year ago, I too was hesitant to share this space and actually talk to my neighbors, but I have to say, once I got over my own inhibitions, I have only gained from this common area and the community that comes with it. Getting to know your neighbors doesn't hurt that much. This kind of set up is just part of living in the city.

The chandelier is dated. Get something light and airy like this example from Ikea. http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/40155009/ Ditch the bookshelves and replace with something more modern. The couches are beautiful, but let the wall breath. Bring them out a bit from the wall. Paint the walls either crisp white, or go the opposite route and paint them a darker value of whatever color you like. I always feel like a darker value paint really makes a room pop! Contrast that with white curtains maybe with a pattern of a contrasting color of the wall color. Add the accent curtain color in throw pillows on the couches. Add some more lamps, maybe a coffee table. Voila!

I believe the loss of tangible art through books and music is the downside of technological advancement. I boast a proud collection of vinyl and books and the love the fact that they decorate my home. They also make me stop and smell the roses. I love lazy afternoons when I have a friend over who wants to share their favorite new record and we sit together by the record player and just listen.

I would never rent a place that didn't allow me to paint. With that said, I've never shied away from painting any and everything. Currently, I have my entire rental painted various shades from pink to gray to black. I have hand stenciled a border around the dining room. I have painted an entire wall in the living room with black trees and I hand painted the head board over the bed, head boards are expensive, paint is not! The bottom line is, it's just paint.

I think this is a great idea. You'll never know unless you try, right? My biggest piece of advice is storage in your new home. Get creative with this. Storage under the bed is magical. My husband and I have always shared small spaces. I always turn the biggest closet in my home into my art supply room. I think you're gonna really enjoy the challenge this will present you. Less is more!

What if you put the bed against the bathroom wall, as suggested by others, with the head of the bed against the window wall. Separate the bed from the living space with a sheer curtain. Place the futon flush with the opposite wall facing the bed and curtain. Against the curtain "wall" place a low table for TV. You could even have room this way for a small arm chair to close off the living space facing the window wall.
