In the professional world I find people think you are a kid with no commitment if you "still" rent. For a while I would let the world assume I owned a condo downtown. When I saw young people at work get themselves in financial trouble to buy that house I started talking openly about renting and why it works for me. I think it is great that we have choices and we all can come to the choice that is right for us. 10 years in an apartment with more windows than most houses. Love the view from here.

I'm Renting...And Okay with That

Thanks for sharing this great home. Thanks even more to the creators for sharing their experience in merging styles and homes. My partner and I are still working on this after 20 years. I think rental spaces can put challenges on us that make us think a little harder and develop even better solutions than would come from a slate that includes an eraser. Inspiring home. Thanks again for sharing.

My walk in closet has become so spacious I do a little happy dance whenever I go in there. Seriously. Since it is now so nice in our closet we relax and take the time to get stuff put away. Your idea of happy spaces has just inspired me to hang a picture over the dresser in the closet so I can really claim and enjoy this space. Sometimes cleaning is like getting an extra room.

Your space looks great. I feel like I could just sit down and relax. The fun light solutions have inspired me to review mine here again. Thanks for sharing.

Kate's January Cure: My Fourth Week January Cure Diaries
1/30/13 8:35 PM

Was about to laze out on the couch and clean Saturday but the post reminded me how much I can get done and enjoy the results the whole week. This will also let me evaluate where my remaining clutter spots are and update my list for future work. I am going to get some wine, put on a record, and knock this out. Thanks again for running this mini cure.

Day 21: Speedy Spruce Up & Surface Clean Apartment Therapy January Cure
1/30/13 6:40 PM

Hang Art Day has been on the calendar for weeks. Luckily it fell on an evening we are both home. We need to evaluate our existing and new art and that involves both of us. We have been considering some different approaches. Tonight we are going to make a home cooked meal together and hang some art. Since there are some existing holes that are pretty high, tomorrow might be Wall Patching Day.

Day 20: Hang Your Artwork Apartment Therapy January Cure - Day 20
1/29/13 11:25 AM

Feeling great after a lot of hard work this weekend. As some have noted this process has been great for getting life's other messes in order too. I have tried to do the full AT cure twice before and while I learned from those it was more than I could accomplish. This is still a serious amount of work but feels obtainable. Having everyone out there helps too. As I share my life with another person input on how others are coordinating with partners has been great. We are starting to get back the love for our apartment we had 9 years ago. Thanks.

Day 18: Weekend Chores: Flowers, Living Room, Empty Your Outbox Apartment Therapy January Cure
1/27/13 9:36 PM

I have an arc lamp that I was initially disappointed with over the coach. The light was not pleasant. I moved it over a desk where the reflection off the hard surface really helped. I played with different basic bulbs for color and brightness till I got one I liked.

How things reflect is my challenge with two walls of windows and high ceilings. Works great in the day but just can't get enough light at night without looking like a house of lamps. Now I know my large collection of lamps is messing with my flow and will review.

Day 17: Looking at Living Room Lighting Apartment Therapy January Cure
1/24/13 11:48 AM

I have been heading toward the system Dot525 outlined above. With this cure I plan to get all the way there. I started tackling this with the landing strip and bedroom (home to the files) assignments. Tonight I will consolidate to a nice box and include checkbook, stamps, etc. that I need to complete the tasks. I work mostly from the iPad now on bills so a nice portable box will be handy. I feel better already.

Day 14: Get Papers & Files in Order Apartment Therapy January Cure
1/21/13 12:30 PM

Tackled the large walk-in closet in the bedroom today. This closet also is home to craft supplies, camping gear, holiday stuff, suitcases, linens, aquarium supplies, and the list goes on. Purged quite a bit and got the summer clothes put away. Swept under everything and we are looking good. Tomorrow the desk and the rest of the bedroom while I do the laundry. I can totally neglect this room so it is good to give it a little attention this weekend. Plan to get an orchid or jade tomorrow when I am done.

Day 13: Weekend Chores - Flowers & Bedroom Apartment Therapy January Cure
1/19/13 7:02 PM

Did it. Love it. I knew this was on the schedule so I didn't even check my email from AT. I made a list of my personal chores and options for the day on a post-it and stuck it to my phone to remind me to fast. I didn't put the radio in the car. I exercised and drove to my own thoughts and the sounds of the world. At home I enjoyed the silence and conversation with my husband as I cooked, ate, and worked on a chair recovering project. Someone posted they do no TV Tuesdays. No TV here but media free Wednesday may become a habit.

Day 11: Try a Media Fast Apartment Therapy January Cure
1/17/13 6:08 AM

Couldn't sleep so tackled the drawers in the kitchen. (Waiting till later to tackle cabinets with the pots and pans in respect of the small distance from my kitchen to the neighbor's bedroom.)

Day 8: Weekend Chores - Flowers, Kitchen Cleaning & Make Yourself a Meal Apartment Therapy January Cure
1/13/13 5:57 AM

Selected Project: Entryway Upgrade
- Clean scuff marks off walls (just realized I don't have to paint to make this area look better)
- New console table (eyeing one but more research to do as I am afraid to go too narrow)
- Hooks for guests coats (hard part will be getting nerve to hang them)
- Obscure circuit panel box
- Closet cleanup
- Towel racks in bathroom (to get towels out of entryway)
- Experiment with lighting
- New tray/box for keys (partner's pick/indulgence for helping me on this journey)

Feels good to commit publicly. Good luck to all and thanks for sharing.

Day 5: Select One Project from Your List to Complete this Month Apartment Therapy January Cure
1/8/13 12:57 PM

Exhausted from the mopping but worth it when I stepped out of he shower to a beautiful floor. Did some minor rearranging we had identified in our list since I was already moving stuff around to clean the floors. Having just the floors on the cleaning list kept me from getting off track and overwhelmed. Flowers are a stress to me but I did get them (while getting some wine) and have them set in a window between our entryway and kitchen. Outbox is temporarily in the closet as I have guests tomorrow for brunch.
