IMHO this post explains why it's a bad idea to paint a fireplace.

That said, I would find an inconspicuous place and see what the brick under the paint is like--and how hard it will be to remove. You don't have to use a sandblaster--in fact, if you do it will ruin the brick.

I would first try a soy-based paint remover. Paint can also be removed with steam--Google this and you'll find an explanation. If you have a wall-paper steamer that might work.

Paint the grout! The dark grout against the honey stone looks dated, but the honey stone itself seems a nice color.

You need to do some research--first, consult a real estate agent. You may detract from the value of the home if you paint the stone. I know painting things is fashionable right now, but many people don't like it when rough surfaces (e.g. brick) are painted--because there is absolutely no way to get the paint off.

Second, I notice the house next door has stone also. So even if you paint yours, you still have to look at theirs.

Third, find out why your brick was covered with stone veneer. Maybe the brick was deteriorating.

Fourth, put things on the porch that draw the eye away from the stone, e.g. flowers in baskets, etc.

Good luck--but don't paint.

Mantel looks great! How nice to see fine old wood respected instead of painted! AT please take note!

I would have like more explanation about the final stages, i.e. going from "most of the paint off" to "all paint off". The few times I've stripped something, I could never get all the paint off. In the "After' photo, the upper left rosette still appears to have some paint around it--or is this a trick of the light?

Also, how did you finish the mantel? Again, a beautiful job--and so nice to see something restored instead of painted.

Sarajanie--
I did look at the LLBean Waterhog Everyspace. Functionally it seems great. But I'm not keen on any of the colors. What color do you have and do you like it?

Does anyone have a suggestion for good looking doormat?

Also has anyone tried the Crate and Barrel teak doormat? Will it take dirt off shoes? Does it stain or mark the floor?

Many thanks!

I apologize for the all bold. I made a mistake the "unbold" tag should have been . I'd edit my comment if I could. I meant to click the Preview button not the Submit. Again my apologies. I'm new to this, obviously.

I'm new to AT--and really like the January Cure. But for me, a few changes to the website would make it better.
1. I'd love to be able to edit my comments.
2. I like the Live Blogging section--but would prefer it not <\b> to be a link--because then there are two threads of comments--and the subject is essentially the same.
3. Also I got confused and posted my own comment under Live Blog instead of the main assignment for the day. No biggie--but I thought my comment had been deleted.

Cat lovers: lilies are poisonous to cats.
http://vetmedicine.about.com/od/toxicology/a/Lily-Toxicity-In-Cats-And-Dogs.htm

My daughter's cat had to be in intensive care for nearly a week after nibbling the Easter lilies.

For my "flowers", I'm going to make an arrangement of holly, evergreens and fruit on a platter, perhaps with some candles. $$ are an issue at the moment, but the green boughs are free for picking.

My Outbox is a bookcase that I moved into a corner in the front hall. The Outbox is really ingenious idea. I love it that if you're undecided the item must stay in the Outbox for one week--a great way to test whether you prefer to keep or discard it.
