If you buy these, be sure to look at the sizing. UK beds are smaller than US beds. If you have a US queen bed, it's best to get a UK king duvet cover.

These actually close at night and open again in the morning. They are incredible. The lovely Sharon of Floricopia has these vines growing at her space at Soolip on Melrose.

Yes, please! For lack of space, I have not made the move to purchase a full vacuum. I've been using a car-vac that my husband already had and it's breaking my back!

While I won't be buying this for my house, the wonderful concept behind this is reported here:

On this oddly rainy day in Los Angeles, reading this post puts me right back into my old flat on Westbourne Park Road. Some of my best memories. Enjoy your new neighborhood!

I don't consider bedding sets under $300, as Dwell's are, PRICEY. You get what you pay for in bedding. Buying bedding for a steal at Ikea or Target prices, for instance, doesn't necessarily pay off in the long run. You lose on comfort and quality. I guess it's just what's important each person.

Have you ever seen the wall of succulents at the Target center courtyard on Santa Monica and La Brea? I can't remember the details of it, but it's a similar "sideways" effect going up the facade. Really interesting.

I agree, having people over is a great motivator. We had a small gathering over the weekend and I cleared things away that had been sitting out for months on end. Not only did it feel great to hear our guests compliment us on our place, it was great to start the week off in a clutter free apartment. Ahhhh.

Wow. They're going to have to take their cause farther than Apartment Therapy. What will they do with comments on Citysearch, Yelp, etc.?! User comments display the power of the web and stores and brands should, and can, use these comments to better their service and relationship with their customers. I've seen two brands respond to negative posts on this site. One did so with dignity, pride in their product and concern for the customers, offered a return method and apologized. . .came out looking like a hero. The other slammed the user for their negative comments and denied the problem with their product. They looked completely foolish.

The woodsy image is in a great spot, as the image nicely balances with the green wall.

The second image with all the little frames up in the corner is giving me an anxiety attack. My sense of balance is telling me that I must move those now!

I love this design. I gave the round serving platter (with short sides) as a wedding gift recently. It's a great piece, as it can stand alone and be integrated with pieces not in the line.

Coincidentally, I just read a press release about Pier 1. Here's an excerpt. . .
---------------------

"Pier 1’s revival is linked to its focus on “stronger impulse items” that are lower-priced and smaller decorative furniture as opposed to high-ticket, large furniture.

What’s more, the retailer need only improve its market share modestly to help get the top line moving north again, Smith said.

In the second quarter, the retailer saw success from the reintroduction of candles, the first-time launch of Halloween merchandise, a major lamp sales event and opening-price-point textiles.

Overall, the expansion of opening-price-point merchandise across product categories is “paying off,” Smith said."

------------------

From a quick look at the pillows online, they've ditched the more on-trend design they recently launched. The more modern lines failed to do well and they're desperate to turn things around. They're getting back to more traditional Pier 1 products, at lower prices.

Looks like she pulled an Ellsworth with her bed as well, with the white duvet with no duvet cover. :-)

Super high thread count is often a marketing ploy. A 200 thread count sheet can sometimes be much better in quality than an 800 thread count sheet.

One of the most important things is the cotton that the yarn is spun from. Long staple (fiber) cottons make the softest and strongest yarns. These are cottons such as Egyptian, Pima, Supima and Sea Isle. Short staple cotton requires many more of the short fibers to spin the yarn, making it thicker and weaker (and can result in pilling).

Thread count is the number of threads woven into a square inch of fabric. If you're using a thinner yarn made of long staple cotton fibers, as mentioned above, lots of them will fit into the square inch, creating a high quality result. Many of the manufacturers who claim, however, i.e. an 800 thread count, are taking the lesser quality, short staple cotton yarns and twisting two together to make one, then including the two in the thread count claim. This can double what the thread count really is.

Percale and sateen are both types of weaves. Percale creates the crisp, clean (yet still soft) linen and sateen is a silkier soft with a sheen.

In linens, you get what you pay for!

Pasta with fish sauce in Vernazza, Cinque Terre. I later learned that it is made from fish heads put through a ricer, so I have not been brave enough to reproduce it.

The Wine Factory in London make a seemingly simple green risotto. I asked the chef to write down the recipe. It was slightly indistinguishable, so I've had to experiment a few times and seemed to have finally nailed it. It's made with a "nage" made with greens like arugula and spinach, which give the broth it's green color. Then a puree of greens is also added in, as well as some asparagus. A touch of butter at the end. It's delicious.

The gazpacho at Les Fables de la Fontaine in Paris was to die for. It was not soupy, but a layered glass of crab, avocado, a creamy tomato layer, etc.

Ferrara in Rome is unbelievable with wine lists that are literally books.

I'm not a fan either. There's no warmth to it. Looks like it's trying to be futuristic.

I'm feeling lucky. . .I recently stumbled into 2 vintage Saarinen executive chairs and snatched them up!

I've been addicted to many magazine subscriptions over the years. And I've parted with many of the collections over time.

In order to part with early Martha Stewart mags, I went through one by one and tore out articles and recipes I thought I'd use (great, forgotten reading in the midst). I recycled the remains.

My husband parted with his Wallpaper collection. We found a user group on Yahoo, I can't remember the name, but it's a group where you can post that you want to give things away for free. A fellow designer felt like he hit the jackpot when he found our posting and came to pick them up the same day.

Lastly, many hospitals and homeless shelters will take magazines, which is one of the best ways to pass them on.
