Hi, everyone! Thaks so much for including bossy color in the article - upholstery is one of my favorite subjects. I wanted to weigh in on slipcovers : while they can be a dreamy, practical solution, be warned that very few upholsterers do slipcvoers as well. super annoying, but there it is. Good luck!

Hi, commenters - this is the owner of the living room. I really appreciate all of the comments, pro and con! I've added the color to the post (it was linked to), but yes, it's Ben Moore's 343 Sunrays. Agree that crown moulding could work, and that may happen eventually to bring the 10.5' ceiling down. In person, everything is to scale - I'm thrilled that Catrin loved it! Thanks again.

I totally agree! Top of my list of reasons why are, "Very well made" and "I already have them." Excellent post, Catrin! xo

I've never seen an industrial space warmed up so well! Anna and Dan's sense of style is so excellent - it looks effortless, which is the biggest compliment I can think of. I recommend GoodWood to my clients all the time, too -

Oh dear - not sure I can get behind this line, Ikea. I agree with the Disney-Tim Burton-Miss Spider comments above. I understand wanting to reach a larger customer base than the sleek modern style attracts (thus the Pottery Barn knockoffs in recent years), but I'm not sure what to make of this. Maybe a single piece could work, but more than 1 could look too leggy and bizarre. I'll check them out in person and see if I change my mind...

I LOVE the dark orange, grey and medium wood combo. Sophisticated but welcoming. Nice work.

This is why I miss Philadelphia. D.C. has events like this, but they don't seem as cohesive or all-consuming. Rittenhouse Square - event or not, summer or winter, day or evening - is one of my favorite places to be.

Thanks for the great write-up, AT! To address bepsf's question, usually, furniture in Design Houses is on loan from manufacturers and showrooms. (In this case, we were asked to use items from the Wash. Design Center as much as possible). Designers ask to have fabric, wallpaper, paint, wall-to-wall carpeting, and flooring donated. The real cost to designers can be labor: contractors, upholsterers, window treatment fabricators, electricians, painters, etc. We even had to pay movers to bring furniture from showrooms downstairs to the Design Center. Participating in a show house can be a significant investment, but obviously we all hope the exposure makes it worthwhile. - Annie Elliott, bossy color

Yikes. Love the color of that mustard yellow chair; not so crazy about the modern wings. Anyone? Anyone?

I just used some gorgeous hand-blocked fabric from Galbraith and Paul for a headboard...sure would be a lot less expensive if I could master this technique! It's worth a shot.

One of my favorite looks has always been MCM furniture w/ Persian rugs - and I associate that look w/ Chicago, for some reason. Great house, flat roof notwithstanding :)

FANTASTIC!! The timing is perfect: I think DC is finally outgrowing its "everyone here is schlumpfy" reputation. Better shops, stylish houses, increasing interest in design - we're ready for you!

I agree with CREames above on the shame of not using original furniture - http://tinyurl.com/9wefaw Regarding the patterned fabrics, though, I think the houndstooth and other geometrics work best. I wonder if this trend will grow on me, or whether my initial skepticism will hold? We'll see -

Finally - galleries that aren't white! There's no such thing as a neutral presentation space, so why not do something different. It's also much easier to sell clients on non-white walls...feels less gallery, more homey...

His most important point is that people need to make their houses work for THEM. There's been a lot of talk about "repurposing" the DR (and I agree - I love bookshelves in a DR), but I feel like these days, it's the LR that's neglected.

One client actually moved her DR table into the LR and converted the former DR into TV-watching room. This forced the LR furniture closer together for a more intimate / conversational space. I thought it was pretty smart of her -

For what it's worth, re: the controversial photo, I hate the table that high! I'm short - I'd be looking right at the side of it.

Forget the handrails (I agree that they're a necessary evil) - what's that beautiful finish on the walls in that bottom picture? Plaster/fresco? Not a faux finish, surely -
