How about baking those cookies together? It's so much more fun! This was a holiday tradition in my family, starting Thanksgiving weekend when the kids were home from college or wherever they were living. When I was little my oldest sister held gift-making workshops with my friends and me. Also fun!

But why should vegetarian dishes be relegated to be "side" dishes? Don't we know enough about nutrition to know that we should favor veggies and if we have meat at all make *meat* the side dish? (I know, ridiculously radical.)

Great post. I bet with all these delicious dishes no one would miss the meat. But...I wish meat-eaters weren't so worried about "getting enough protein". (Maybe they should be worried instead about getting enough veggies!) There is plenty of protein in veggies. Vegans would feel unsatisfied and hungry if that weren't the case. :-)

I really want the recipe for Stileto's nut Wellington so I can make it for Christmas Eve. Please post!

Besides not wanting to commit (which seems to be a huge problem for people) do people hate simply checking the "no" box? Does it seem rude -- because "no" means the same for "I don't like you" and "I'll be out of town"?

I'm not sure why people's lives are busier these days than every before -- and why if friends are expending all kinds of energy to host a party guests can't prioritize the time to be with them.

I'm with those who think you shouldn't spend much on a rental.

1.) Keep the narrow counter. I'm sure it's useful. But keep it open as extra space rather than cluttering it up as countertop storage.

2.) Mount a couple of sturdy boards horizontally above the stove and above the narrow counter into which you can put hooks to hang your pots and other large implements. They'll be highly accessible and you'll save lots of precious drawer space.

3.) Use the tops of those cabinets as storage, or if so inclined, by cubby holes with doors so you can hide things behind and keep the dust out. Paint them to match the room -- either white or something striking, depending on other aesthetics you implement.

4.) If it looks boring (and all white can be drab) then add color by painting the walls and adding colorful hand towels and a rug or two to cover the ugly floor. At least the linens are portable.

Since doing construction in NYC is a pain and everyone needs to be paid off, a $20k budget will run way over that. It seems like a way better idea is to save for a down payment on a closet somewhere else.

Why not buy things that DO go with more than one color scheme? Clear glass containers, neutral colors for towels and curtains, etc. If you buy things of decent quality and take care of them they should last for many many years. Shower caddies shouldn't need to be replaced every time you move. And yes, white towels will look less bright after a while. Maybe don't get white towels?

I've leaned art for a while before figuring out how what I wanted to do with that piece or that wall, and it always looked so much better and more complete after I'd hung the art.

In principle I like the idea behind this. Living in a little house with tiny rooms helps enforce the notion that every purchase must be purposeful. However, my furniture and tchotchkes add color and character to my place -- and the furniture was mostly inherited or trash-picked (so free + labor to fix up). When I go into someone's house for the first time, it's their tchotkes and books that tell me something about them and that are great conversation-starters.

The wood is in such good condition it would be a shame to paint it. I understand not wanting it to be too cabin-y, so I would brighten it up with other things: remove the carpet and put in a large or multiple large rugs; use colorful bed linens, cover the window seat with bright fabric and pillows, and do something with curtains for the windows -- instead of the blinds. Basically, draw attention from the heaviness of the wood but don't cover it up. To put some color in, *maybe* paint the beams a bright blue.

I have #4 and most likely paid the same as everyone else, about $20. The only problem I've ever had is that if you're washing all your glasses and mugs at once and put them on the lower section without anything in the upper section, the thing will tumble to the floor, breaking all your glasses and mugs. It's ugly and sad. So just be sure you're balancing the load top and bottom and you'll be fine.

Since going paperless with billing and canceling most junk mail I'm much better at managing paper and mail, and I'm no longer buried in an untidy mess. But I still sometimes end up with little piles that accumulate each time I clean up. (I have a box packed from years ago when I renovated.) It's making decisions about where to put things if they're unique and "might be useful" one day. That sounds like hoarding, doesn't it? Ugh.

I love the idea of 10 minutes to do a task. One thing I've tried (but have to continually remember to do) is plan to do specific things (like the dishes or laundry-folding) during commercials or while the popcorn is popping, or when I'm chatting on the phone.

Sometimes I get myself to do things by listening to a podcast so that I can focus on the fun part of the task -- the podcast.

How to Tackle That Humongous, Unwieldy Beast of a Nagging Household Chore
8/1/12 12:13 AM

I had a cat sitter (who I really liked) decide to feed that outdoor strays -- with my nice (breakable) dishes and prescription cat food. She thought there was nothing wrong with that and didn't understand why this was a problem for me. Of course the strays continued to come around for a couple of weeks after I got home insisting that I feed them (which I didn't).

So, maybe a note explicitly telling the sitter whether or not to feed the strays, and if so, with what food.
