The general public will never catch on to the importance of fidelity in audio, for a few reasons. One being that, much like picture quality, your average person has no clue what fidelity means when it comes to audio or video. People want what they like, not what's accurate. 99.99999999 % of people have non calibrated displays, and if you try and change settings on a friend's set so that it approaches accuracy, they aren't happy. Too dim, too soft, not enough "pop", it doesn't look like those nature shows they see in HD on the showroom floor. Audio is the same. Accuracy means no tone controls, not being able to hear the bass, the treble not sizzling your ears and destroying your tweeter. People like what they know; loud and awesome sounding. Not flat responses and time and phase coherence.

People also don't want to pay for high quality audio. High end speakers are going to cost you well over what you're comfortable paying and are used to paying. My speakers were only $1200.00 when I bought them, and they were the entry level. I'd say if you want anything close to accuracy, you won't be buying from Best Buy and Walmart. But in general, people aren't willing to pay for real quality, and don't have the desire to find out what real quality entails.

High performance also means taking extra care. People want convenience, not hassle. Even if the rewards are worth it.

Marketing has also convinced the general public that cd quality audio is great......ugghhhh. But, I'd take cd quality over MP3 quality, any time of the day. Most people still don't understand how to hook a blu ray player up, even though it only uses one cable nowadays. The whole thing is just too much for the average person. And that's a sad and wonderful thing. I don't want the waters muddied by mediocrity, and that's exactly what happens whenever anything you are interested in "goes public".
