Weekends are sacred. I'm one of those people that manages to look up from my screen a few nights a week and go, "How did it get to be 10:30 again? No wonder I'm hungry..." I'm not about to sacrifice down time for errands unless I absolutely have to. Especially since the places I do my regular shopping are on the list for the food and lifestyle tourists that come to Austin.

Saturdays are brunch with friends and an afternoon trapsing about outside. Sundays are all-day pajama fests featuring writing or plowing through a whole novel. Maybe I'll throw on yoga pants and hit Whole Foods or play Rock Band with friends after dinner.

I snapped these up at Anthropologie for Christmas gifts and managed to keep one of the black ones for myself. It's pretty fantastic.

Thanks for the heads up on requiring extra hands for my KVARTAL installation.

Hey LauraII--the current issue of Bust has a great article about how to give yourself grand Winehouse-esque hair. I'm tempted to try it out with my Vampy Vampire costume, since it's very retro naughty secretary.

My bathroom is just dandy, so I'll be working more on the living room this week. This weekend, I got most of the hard work done on refinishing a couple of tables. I'd like to get walls painted this weekend if possible.

I have a question for you guys. I got a new white iron 40's bed that's nice and modern on Craigslist last weekend. Now there's too much white going on in my bedroom. It's a rental, so I don't want to do any really colorful painting. I'm thinking of hanging the KVARTAL curtain track system (from Ikea) on the ceiling behind the bed. That way I can have a swath of intense color where I need it. They also have some pretty transparent patterned panels that would make up for not being able to hang art there. Has anyone used the system or have some dire warning about it?

I know it's not terribly green because it contains melamine and would be bad for you pets (or children) if consumed, but the Mr. Clean Magic Erasers have taken stuff off unlike any other product I've used. Nice that it's not chemical as far as spraying something, having fumes, or hurting your skin. You might try something with vinegar...

I feel behind, but I don't think I actually am yet. Likely because I've found/done things not for the week at hand while sorting out my big challenge--the living room.

Last weekend, I found a darling modern, white, iron 40's bed on Craigslist for only $40 and did the minor repairs needed. Then I U-Hauled it home, took my old bed to my parents' house along with the furniture I refinished this weekend. I hope to finish the refinishing this week since my arm gave out after two days of scraping and sanding!

I finally have a plan and color scheme down for rooms. My roommate is on-board and helping me out now, which is really nice. Most importantly, I've come to accept what can't be changed in a rental, and have found good solutions for what I can change. I'll put up pics in my Chicago group later this week when I finish up my refinished tables.

Gorgeous!

I thought this might be a DIY post and am sad that it isn't because I want lighting like that.

Those shelves are glorious! So clever to use exposed framing as built-ins.

The living room is my greatest challenge, but I finally got through my cure block. Last night, I made tiny scale furniture to move around the floor plan and we decided to renew our lease. Lease renewal = painting walls! Yay!

I shall be brave and ruthless. I already filled up an 18 gallon tub with books on the second round of pruning.

I'm in Austin, doing the Deep Treatment. I thought having a larger, nicer apartment with a better floorplan would fix the problem of things not feeling cohesive or well-arranged, but it didn't. I have a minor in ID and am totally embarrassed that I'm fumbling with my own stuff when I have such and easy time coming up with design solutions for friends.

Part of that is that I'm 25 and have a fair bit of hand-me-down furniture. They're really solid, high-quality pieces but aren't the right choice for the space. I'm very much looking forward to having some input on better ways to arrange the furniture in the main room. Will post pictures tonight!

I got my book last night and wrote out my goals. Even though my apartment's really not bad, it has felt anything but cohesive with the annual moving. Starting to figure out what isn't working is such a relief it feels like actual therapy--we don't know what's wrong and it's probably going to take a lot of work to fix it, but oh, the relief of knowing that a solution is forthcoming.

I've been kicking around the idea of doing a Master's in interiors for a couple of years, and am not into the commercial side of it myself. Do a lot of self-analysis and get all the brochures from programs. I was surprised how different their focuses and approaches are. Parsons, Pratt, SCAD and the Boston Architectural Center are my short list.

If you haven't looked at Boston yet, you might want to. They have a 5yr Master's where you work part-time to fulfill the practice requirements for sitting for the licensing exam. It's less expensive and you get some of the expense offset by the apprenticeship thing. Plus you get to cut your teeth in a nurturing, teaching environment. My cousin Rob has friends that go there and LOVE it.

Sounds like you've done a fantastic job!

Clearing clutter from where they're quartered is a must, since it keeps them from feeling as though they're invading someone's private space and stuff. In the guest room, I'll put out magazines, a couple of books for reading, and a couple of art or photo books that I think they'd enjoy. Bottled water and cups, towels, spare toiletries including nice bath stuff, toothbrushes, and disposable razors in their wrappers go in the bathroom. My aim is for my guests to feel like their room is a comfy retreat.

Snacks, suggestions for activities to do themselves with the info on them, etc. are a nice thing to do. Spending all your time together is too much, so I always try to think of fun places to wander around or relax.

Thanks for pointing out this series! Some of these are stunning (this one is my favorite). I love that they use one closet as a pantry and the other for storing cookware and had it wired for the microwave and toaster to keep visual clutter to a minimum. An excellent idea.

I agree with Maxwell's suggestions. Don't be afraid to arrange the living room in a more angled, less rigidly squared off way. The beautiful thing about your lovely space is that it lends itself to these sorts of arrangements that the rest of us long for. You have good, strong pieces whose scale works well together and in the space. Well chosen!

Putting your flat screen TV over by the light might make for some glare problems. You might want to consider a big ceiling to floor drape, lined and in a heavy fabric to fix that problem. It wouldn't have to go all the way across. If you gave enough extra length to let it puddle on the ground, it would be long enough to do a loose, sexy pullback when it's not needed for utilitarian purposes. Something like that makes a tall block of color that would help anchor and define the living room and keep it from having that floating feeling.

I might move the desk once you get the living and sleeping areas switched. Not sure whether it would work better a bit to the left of its current location or if it should go where the DVDs are now. You definitely need big art for the wall where it is now.

Good Questions: How Can I Improve My Layout?
8/7/07 7:56 AM

I second the leather. Another thing I prefer with a patina is glass (not cut glass). Jars and vases and household objects are so much better a little bit dulled. Same thing goes for pewter, brass and some silver.

This made me think about how so many of the products that aren't especially friendly (solid wood, leather) are the things that can stay around forever and be exceptionally useful and beautiful, while polymers and many alternative materials have a set lifespan.

I agree with goodnightdean. I adore the first set of cane chairs but maybe not with botanical fabric--could be way too summer house. Hollywood Regency is hard to go wrong with.

But if you hang out in your living room all the time and want comfort more than chic design, the Restoration Hardware chair is glorious. You'll move into it. Their linen upholstery keeps such a nice, crisp look. Careful accessories in more modern fabrics will shift the thing away from the traditional.

Good Questions: What Chairs to Pair with This Sofa?
6/29/07 10:14 AM

Even if you're handy enough at sewing to make a dress or pillows, there's an excellent chance you can't do justice to the clean lines of contemporary furniture. There's no room for mistakes there.

Heavy upholstery fabrics are really different to work with than normal ones, and home equipment isn't truly up to the task. Also, making your own piping and getting it in there all nice and straight and even will take your soul and leave you a hollow shell of a person. If you're quite handy, I'd suggest doing a small test pillow first in the fabric you'd use with the piping and the gussets and all.

That said, upholstery isn't as expensive as you might think, especially since the wood and supportive parts will be new. The upholsterer can get you good pricing on the fabrics they carry as well (mine in Austin does).

Good Questions: Is DIY Reupholstering Recommended?
6/22/07 8:14 AM

I'd never have that carpet in my house, but I think it works fine in a beach rental color-wise. Just pull it (or a lighter shade of it) into some accents like silky pillows. Target has nice ones that would work and they're cheap.

I love the idea of matching the sand and using other tones on the same color card. Paint the wall behind the bed one of the middle colors on the card. Ditch the bedding and go for all whites. If everything is very airy, the bed's visual heaviness is a lot less of a problem and makes it a good focal point. I'd pull inspiration from traditionally Southern summer fabrics with gauzy cottons, linen, lawn. Replace the table skirt with something not shiny, like a vintage tablecloth.

Good luck getting it rented!

Good Questions: What Would Martha Do Here?
6/12/07 8:01 AM

I use mine for what Mrs. Meyer's can't get out (which isn't much). Mostly for the moving into a new apartment and want to make sure it's *really* clean. The eraser took up dirt that hands and knees brush scouring couldn't get out of linoleum--it was a totally different color. It's okay used gingerly on things painted with high-gloss enamel (like kitchen walls), but I'd test first.

My cleaning progression is natural methods to chemicals to this. I'm not sure that this is a worse thing than going through an entire bottle of something like super-strength Tilex when a minute with the eraser will get the job done. I'll be sure to clean up well after myself and keep these where the dog can't get them.
