Lessons From Traveling Abroad: Always Carry Peanut Butter

@teakfreak, that pizza sounds great. I think sometimes I would like anchovies on anything savory!

I must try this gingersnap combo. Just found a very good local blue cheese recently.

wow, that is odd. I like odd things. I like butter. I like coffee. I might have to try this!

fascinating. I am an experienced bread baker and I've made no-knead bread before, but I, too, would like to see the pinching and folding process in photos of some kind. I wonder if this would work with my sourdough starter instead of instant yeast.

It always seems pretty easy to get caffeine away from home, but I like both tea and coffee. In fact, when I'm traveling, I miss decaf options to go with late night dessert. I've never found an instant coffee that I like enough to carry with me.

what a helpful travel motto! I'm a planner, so this is a helpful reminder to put the plans in the background or on hold and go with YES.

I have a quite long (six feet, maybe?) braided rug that is in front of my sink and adjoining cupboards. Because it is so long, it doesn't move around easily. It's machine washable, but I usually just shake it outside most of the time. A small cloth rug is going to rumple and shift much more easily.

I am happily addicted. I've learned (probably through the mental disorder) that for optimum happiness, I don't exceed 1 cup a day. I think calling coffee withdrawal a mental health disorder is ridiculous - it's very tempting, then, to look for pills and professional medical advice and yaddah yaddah yaddah. If you can't handle caffeine, don't drink anything that contains it. I know plenty of people who avoid it and plenty of people (my husband is one) who can drink any amount on any day with no issues.

I love my physical cookbook collection and I find it helpful to limit myself to those books sometimes - too easy to be overwhelmed by the WWW (or misled by poor recipes with wrong measurements). I like to thoroughly cook from the recipe collection in a cookbok that a cook or cooks put together and write notes on the recipes. Limits like this foster my creativity. I do pin recipes and get recipes online, but I'll never be switching entirely to digital or the web for my recipes.

depends on how pristine you want to keep your books. mine are on a shelf a few feet from the stove, but I do have a powerful vent hood and I don't fry a lot. There's still a fair amount of cooking film that gets all around the kitchen.

I never it cook it as long as the box states - always a few minutes shy of that because it continues to cook/soften a bit after the water is dumped off. I cannot stand mushy pasta. Our favorite brand is Barilla, but I'm not sure I've ever tried DeCecco.

Our go-to pasta is pasta and pesto (homemade frozen cubes in the winter, fresh in the summer).

If I don't have to lug them (like backpacking or something), I put everything in canning jars with screwtop lids I got at the Amish store. I made a few insulated sleeves which also keeps them from crashing into each other in a basket or bag, but tempered glass is so tough that I've never had a jar break on me.

Other than that, I avoid items that need refrigeration as I don't want to fuss with ice packs and coolers if I can avoid it.

I am always careful to cook dishes that could be frozen if we don't eat them up before we leave. The bonus is that there's something good in the freezer that I can defrost when we return.

@Grossvater, I don't mind if my cookbooks get worn and used. In fact, if a cookbook is just a pretty face, I usually get rid of it in favor of a workhorse. I write notes in my cookbooks, too. So I'm not the type to be keeping my cookbooks in pristine condition.

can't imagine what food would look good through blue glass! I have an old blue canning jar I use for a vase, but for real canning, I'm sticking with clear jars.
