You folks dissing turntables are nutjobs! I don't get your remarks at all. A turntable is usually the sign of an audiophile & a person who cares about quality in music, generally speaking. In case you haven't noticed, there's a renaissance in vinyl. Sure mp3, iTunes & the like is very convenient & I use it all the time, BUT I also know they're just digital bits that can't compare to analog, & bummer of bummers hard drives eventually crash & fail. It's not if, but when:) It might be like comparing estate grown extra virgin unfiltered olive oil, with pure olive oil that's been filtered & had all the life stripped out of it. I realize many people aren't going to care which is absolutely fine.
TP, that's another matter, I don't understand people budgeting extra cash to buy premium toilet paper. THAT makes no sense to me:)

I think it's a great looking bed frame. It reminds me a bit of the case study platform beds manufactured by Modernica, particularly the fastback which I also think is very nice looking. I like the contrast between the brushed metal legs & the wood used in the frame. It's elegant indeed.

I really appreciate & like DWR a great deal. Every person I've worked with there has been bend over backwards helpful, friendly, & very easy going. The studio in Santana Row, San Jose were particularly helpful when I was trying to find house numbers that were on sale. I think they're a rare breed that not only sell stuff (which anyone can do by the way), but have done a pretty awesome job of educating the public & making intelligently designed merchandise a more widely understood cultural phenomenon. I think they take a good share of the credit for this, & I hope that they don't deviate from that particular formula because I think everyone would lose if that were too happen. If DWR had not been created, I wonder if modern design would get the attention it deserves in the marketplace. Sure buying stuff is of course fun, but I think they've also made learning & educating ourselves as equally enjoyable as well. No business is a zero risk endeavor but we try to mitigate the risk to a manageable degree, kudos to them & Rob Forbes.
p.s.-I don't work for them in case you're wondering, nor am I a shareholder.

I really appreciate what they've done with the house especially in regards to returning the house to its original splendor. Nicely done indeed.

This is an interesting thread to read folks;)
I first saw the ad for the infamous Hastens bed mattress in Dwell, & for better or worse the model they listed was about fifty grand. All I can say is that I have absolutely no personal experience with the product but my gut instinct & common sense tells me that any type of value for dollar simply isn't in the equation unless of course it's spun with hair from a blonde maiden or gold thread. Someone mentioned the checkered pattern which instantly identifies the brand & the first thing that popped into my mind was was Burberry's checkered baseball caps for street wear & it's associated prestige. There's absolutely nothing wrong with that of course as long as you're not in denial about the message. If I was running that Hastens company, I'd be spending a lot of advertising dollars in modern day Moscow or St. Petersburg Russia where the perceived value relative to the product would make sense to a population with astronomical amounts of cash to burn.

Hi everyone, I just wanted to say thanks to all of you for offering your input re. that king sized frame. I ultimately decided to take a pass on it because I like my queen size mattress & really want to stick with it. I tend to go long term with purchases thus it's probably better to get the right size in the first place. I think it's sort of similar to buying a pair of shoes or pants, they might be a famous brand or designer, but if they don't fit it, it simply won't work.

Patrick (the other one) needs to chime in.
Oh Patrick where art thou?

I'm assuming steam bent legs would be pretty durable actually. It's possible there MIGHT be some flexing, but even so I just can't imagine there'd be much of an issue here.

I think it's a great bed too. I did call Modernica down in LA because I'd heard a rumour about that frame made from solid timber. Turns out it was true, but they quickly discontinued it because of warpage & cracks particularly in dry climes.
Ply is pretty amazing stuff.

I'm thinking of buying the one from DWR since they have 15% off & free shipping on or before the 12th.

Speaking as an audiophile: Nice Krell too............which tends to have very sharp corners that could hurt little fingers.

Brilliant idea, but yeah I do wonder about the sound ricocheting around the inside there from the center channel.

In this case, the beauty of plexiglass is that you can see though it & admire the eye candy of high end separates which this most certainly is.

I don't have kids or pets, so I don't need to do this .....yet.
I'm making a mental book marker however;)

Yeah, that is a bit pricey I have to agree, however, I do think superbly designed products (especially those made in America) made for the masses is something of a complete myth.

Boomer, every post I've read of yours you rain on other people's parade a lot.
You're not being 'attacked' just questioning why you spew so much negativity, so frequently.
Let's take a long hard look inside your place with pictures (unless you've already done so.......), or better yet invite us over & we'll bring pen & notepad so we can take notes.

I think her place is extremely nice & she appears to have put a lot of effort into making it so. If I was in her place I'd be smiling too (well I already am but that's another story).

Boomer you're predictably irascible & sour grapes whenever you post on here, you never seem to have anything positive to say which is unfortunate. Why is this so?

I always enjoy reading Patrick the Other One's posts as he seems pretty objective & more often than not is able to offer sophisticated opinions.

As a side note:
I was in my fave bookstore & was looking at what I'm assuming was this months edition of Harvard's design mag.
There's an interesting article in there that discusses how architects & the architectural profession in general are at risk of becoming passe' or less important for the simple reason they don't evolve very easily, or, as the article said architects are too "hide bound".
The article also claims that many people in other fields are moving onto the "turf" traditionally held near & dear to architects, such as engineers, etc. & that if things don't change architects will only really be necessary for exterior cladding.
So in simple English, evolve or perish.

Dear Architects,
