After looking at the kitchen, master bath, and disgustng pet-stained carpet during our first walk-through, I turned to my husband and said, "I would ***never*** live here!" But the house's quiet cul de sac location and good bones eventually won out. We've been here for little over a year. The master bath has been renovated, we've installed hardwood floors to replace the gross carpet, and we're slowly chipping away at the kitchen's flaws. There's been a lot of paint and construction dust. Interior design has become a "hobby" out of necessity: the projects are costly enough that we literally can't afford to get them wrong. (So far, the only redo was repainting a light green kitchen after we installed a flourescent overhead light and the whole room turned a nasty hospital color.) While it's far from perfect, there are no longer any huge embarassments. We love our humble place, warts and all.

Long Floridatile that looks like wood would look amazing with your vanity (and cleans like a dream.) Mine looks like weathered driftwood. Here's what we did:

As there are no other employees, it depends on whether clients or deliveries are expected. Other than that, it all turns on whether I'd be mortified answering the door if someone ***unexpectedly*** showed up.

Curve appeal as a rug-sized inset in the middle of a bathroom/laundry area, surrounded by larger, cool white tile. The tiles look like fish scales, which would work with either a beach or spa/zen theme.

3 solid walnut MCM dining room chairs for $10 ea. Works nicely with the Broyhill Brasilia table and three chairs I bought for $60 total. Again, everything fit in the back of my Mazda 3 once the back seats were folded down.

Dirty Little Secrets of Tidy Families

A small, second wedding held in a tiny stone chapel in NH that was a mini- Taj Mahal (hubby built it in memory of his late wife). The name of the chapel - Alvirne - was a combination of the names of the husband and wife. ("Alfred" and "Virginia.") The caretaker - who served as JP - didn't mind that the couple wanted to exchange Buddhist vows. The weather was perfect and the bride and groom passed out a rainbow assortment of parasols in the parking lot afterwards. Bride surprised groom with a bellydancer at the reception, which instead of a wedding cake, featured a "cake buffet" of specialty flavors. Each table had several trivia cards about the happy couple. Instead of formal speeches, guests passed around microphones to share their good wishes. (Yup, it was my own wedding...)

@nccata : We are up in NH. The prices at SA and GW are very irregular. Sometimes, they are reasonable; other times, they try to match the higher prices of consignment stores. I've learned to keep rope in the car and grab something when I see it, because it it's priced right, it goes quickly.
