I love the shower niche, just be careful you make them large enough... The previous homeowners had built them into our current master bath and guest bath shower tubs. The master's niche is a perfect size but the guest's is too small for even standard size bottles. It's so frustrating - avoid that design mistake!

Great suggestions! I have another good tip: get a pet! Besides being wonderful companionship on their own (they're great listeners), a pet such as a dog can be a great icebreaker to meet neighbors or people at a dog park. I have gotten to know dozens of neighbors on walks with my dog (adopted just last December), and have built friendships with a number of them. And if you go out walking midday, you'll find the other freelancers who are also out taking a break from their work.

Some really great advice! We're trying to embrace a "lived in" house: at a party my husband and I hosted, a girl's uncapped stiletto dented our hardwoods like a woodpecker gone wild. We didn't tell the girl, and my hubs and I just laughed it off and view it as added distressing and charm. It was worth the fun night with friends.
