Agree with Elaine. In Japan, it's customary for the new person on the block to give a little something - a new hand towel, packet of food - to the people on the right, left and directly in front as a token of appreciation, "in advance", and as an apology for trouble caused. But an American might think that the person moving in will be the recipient of a greeting or plate of cookies. So both sides wait, patiently...

thank you for sharing this. i like the way domestic essentials are used minimally and thoughtfully in a european style influenced by japan. yet there is a disciplined and curious mind there, geared to making (love the shop!) is the sculpture in the last image a louise nevelson?

re concrete, look into Sonomastone's "nucrete" which has gorgeous colors but they mix in an epoxy which makes the surface less porous and impermeable to stains. we didn't end up using it for various reasons but it is a beautiful surface.

Re Pyrolave (lavastone) your article mentions a waiting list, but we received our order last week, right on schedule, and it was installed today (northern Cali). It's gorgeous and we are thrilled. There is one con that I've already discovered - it's so beautiful I'm a little afraid to use it. Oh, thought of another one -- very hard to decide on a color. (We put lavastone on either side of the sink and will be putting mahogany butcher block adjacent and on a peninsula).

I never would've selected those handles but I love their outsized character -- like tortoise shell glasses, bakelite pulls, wooden handles on a retro handbag. At first glance, they look like copper or brass. Lots of character and against that black lacquer? oooh, a touch of Paris (imho!).

We had a situation in Dallas, TX which reminds me of your case. We hung a 20" x 24" mirror in the kitchen which had a wooden frame that was painted, with cutouts, like shutters (sounds corny but it was charming). We painted a trompe l'oeil vine around the mirror/window and when we sold the house, left it as it was over the kitchen table. The house not only sold with no problem but the buyer placed the condition in that we leave the mirror and small mural. I had the wooden mirror frame copied and left the excellent copy.
If I were a buyer with a kid, I'd love the mural! But I like the idea of providing photoshop images of a plain wall and the offer of payment for a paint job.
Good luck!

I like the way the blue whale on the black rectangle is next to (and kind of the inverse of) the blue rectangle with the rice bowl and chopsticks. The argyle is playful!

Bright, cheery and for under $50? great job! I like the blue, which is a pretty shade and appropriate for a bath and shower room.

Thanks for this post. I've been looking for a wall-mounted lamp for a small space and came up with these. But I may end up with your West Elm!

Lovely lovely home!

I also might try to save for a custom or artist made screen door for some day in the future.

Japanese urban neighborhoods tend to be a mishmash of styles, especially in places where the housing stock was built after the destruction of World War II.

Neighbors would not take this as a "FU" but as someone who had the money to build their vision on a relatively small piece of property. Japan has half the population of the US and less livable space than California.

A lot of contemporary domestic architecture is not meant to last more than a few generations. In a country where temples are centuries old, people take things like this less seriously than we do. Curiousity more than anger would be the norm.

Hi CFYG,
"Folks in the UK embracing various styles of dress" were colonialists who demeaned indigenous dress as beneath "civilized" Western styles. Or they selectively borrowed what they thought was exotic to fulfill their own ideas of what the "other" was.

Gandhi started the khadi movement of wearing Indian hand-spun cotton to reject Western dress, inspire pride in native clothing, and to bolster employment. It's not a level playing field when one talks about the politics of dress in colonized countries.

Maybe this calls for renting the film Gandhi....!

I loved the detail at the corner of the room, where the top of the wood wall behind the bed met the top of the window. But this disappeared -- and the room made a little generic - when everything turned white.

I like the way the new cork floor connects the kitchen and dining area now. In the "before" picture, the white tile and cabinetry really divide the two spaces.

I wonder if the faucet is the old one. If so, I kind of admire that they're not putting into landfill something that still works.

what's fun about the home tours is that each home dweller has his/her own style.

vive la difference!

you've done a fantastic -- no make that unbelievable -- job on your home (which, while not my personal bent, is inspiring in its creativity, hard work and vision -- not to mention your generosity in the sharing of details). only "add color" or "mess up your bed so we think it looks casually lived-in" if you feel like it!

thanks for letting us peek and enjoy

thank you for (bravely) sharing your private space. it's fun to see a work in progress and inspiring to see that someone enjoys --and employs -- different ideas with a spirit of art and adventure. have little kids come to your place? they'd love the sliding bookcases (as would "big kids" with a sense of play). thanks for the smile today.

we have open shelving in our late 50s house and love it. some people are "visual" and love seeing what they want to grab right now, and others are of the "visual" school who don't want the clutter in their face and prefer to see uninterrupted rows of beautiful cabinetry. variety is the spice of life! i like the bright, informal and lived-in yet contemporary feeling of this kitchen.
