I would suggest looking at some of Apartment Therapy's nursery design posts for inspiration. I don't have kids so they don't apply to me, but I often find a couple of things that I would like to have in my house. Kid and adult friendly!

I think a good step toward your final goal would be to toss the back cushions and make it a pillow back couch. New foam is so expensive, and a bunch of mismatched fun pillows is a good way to give the couch some life until you can commit to the cost of a refurbish. I have a similar couch and instead of upholstering it, I removed the ugly skirt with a boxcutter, made a snugly fitting slipcover and pinned it to the underside of the couch so that it has the look of a reupholster but way cheaper and it's removable/washable. It's amazing how revealing the legs makes it looks so much more modern! Good luck

i like Dia's idea of rerouting the stairs, but if you want a less costly solution, I would just make two zones. You could have two nice chairs facing the fireplace (one kitty-cornered on the stairwell wall and the other floating, and then make a separate area with the couch and the tv

I think given the wood and the fact that it is going to be primarily a reading/studying area, go for coziness. I think a lodge meets Southwestern would be nice- plaids, wools, lots of textures, and some Southwestern prints in blues and reds.

PS Stretching it over a frame rather than putting it in a glass frame would look cooler I think, a la the suggestion from Emily Henderson's home tour. Also, I disagree with the comment that it isn't a good idea to let each of your have your own space (I refuse to use the term "man cave"). It works for us, and it would be insensitive to expect your boyfriend to throw out everything you don't like. On the other side of the coin, I keep the things that he isn't crazy about (vintage ceramics ;) in my sewing room. Voila!

How Can We Compromise on Decorating (While Incorporating a Norwegian Flag)? Good Questions

I agree that the first post is mean! Framing seems like a good idea, but if it is a really new looking flag with bright whites and colors I would suggest asking him if you could antique it a little bit so it doesn't look so college dorm. Maybe a little tea dye to soften the contrast of the colors and a little roughing it up with some sandpaper?

As far as decorating together, I usually narrow it down to a couple of options and then let him choose which one he likes the best. That way he is involved but it saves you the frustration of having to agree on something in the vast sea of lamps/rugs/curtains/bedding, etc.

I just moved into a rental house with a dishwasher and I thought my life was saved. Oddly enough, we have only used it once, after our Superbowl party! There are only two of us, so if we put the dishes in the dishwasher as we use them, we run out of dishes to use before it is full enough to run!

It looks awesome! As for the texture, I believe you are supposed to lightly sand the fabric in between coats to get rid of the scratchiness. Well done though!
