It definitely sounds like the 90's when you play all the videos at the same time. :)

My strategy is to place the TV inside the defunct fireplace, and load up an Instant Fireplace video in it. :)

It would have been a great design, if their creators aren't so over-confident about their logo to make it so large and centered.

The pulling of the cord triggering the turn of the disc is what makes the old design so delightful - it's one motion leading to another, much like an unlikely Rube Goldberg machine.

Unfortunately, the new one has the form of the old, but does not have the correlation of motion like the CD player. What remains is the ghost of the previous idea, and an unnecessary gesture to control play/stop. (Who's going to walk to the speaker to control that anyway? They pause with the phone itself.)

Do you get disappointed when you upgrade everything in the house to 1080p just to find out that all the movies are in 21:9, which puts giant black bars on top and bottom of your brand new screen... again?

I guess this isn't a bad idea when you're viewing 16:9 content on a 21:9 screen.

Be sure to use LED christmas lights, not incandescent ones, or it will be a major fire hazard.

And for a cleaner look, use heavy duty staples instead of the 3M clips recommended in the article.

The last one from Target seemed to look the best.

Is there a stainless steel one anywhere?

This one looks very stylish but I don't know if it's functional:

There's a misconception that buying goods that are heralded to help organize will automatically clean up your desk. A lot of times in my experience, it tends make the desk even more cluttered instead because it introduces more small objects on the table.

Cable organizers are one of those goods that claim to organize yet introduce more mess: Imagine a desk with just a MacBook, a phone, and the power cord to the two machines. That's only 2 objects and 2 wires. But it will be 4 objects and 2 wires after the cable organizers - and the desk will look messier as a result.

In cases like that, it's better off the user just learn how to tie a knot. A good knot makes the cables look much better without the extra bulk. Or tuck the cable under the table. Anything that would reduce anything visible would help.

The same goes for any organizers that are more like stylish showpieces rather than functional tools. Most objects are better off hidden or stashed away in drawers, if the user is intent to reduce clutter.

My 2 cents. Hope it helps. :)

Many techies are quick to dismiss B&O as being expensive, but they don't realize that they are also buying a nice piece of designer furniture.

Of course, meanwhile, the price of designer furniture doesn't need to be priced like DWR either.

Yep, second on OneNote. That seems like an obvious choice for it has iPhone, Windows, web and Windows Phone clients. Besides, I can click anywhere and type instead of being restricted to a top-down list - much easier to organize thoughts that way.

This is definitely my favorite photography studio-on-the-go list, especially the chocolate, toys and scarf!

It's easy for photo buffs to list all the nerdy equipment they like, but the key to be a great photographer is to be able to communicate with your subject. Small touches like those make a huge difference!

Thanks!!!

This is a good list of how to keep gadgets alive when not staying in a hotel and not driving a car while travelling, but definitely is not right for camping in the woods. For Marfa, I guess it's fine.

I'd say the only gadget worthwhile being kept alive while surrounded by nature is the camera, while you are better off saving weight of your backpack by keeping the phone off and leaving the rest at home.

Therefore, the list of supporting gadgets should be focused on the camera:

1. Packs of SD Cards. Bring a whole 10-pack of them if you have the money. This eliminates the need to have tools unloading the photos, as well as providing a fail-safe solution for your photos.

2. Extra Camera Batteries, as well as the Solar pack for charging them.

3. Peak Design Capture Camera Clip System. Works great for instant access to the camera when installed on a backpack.

4. SpareOne emergency phone: http://spareone.com/

If it's a road trip kind of camping, just use the car charger. None of the battery packs or solar panels will be needed.

Hope it helps! Safe trip! I guess I should help contribute to Apartment Therapy Tech too. :)

@Tinka777: The EyeFi is Class 6. It significantly slows down my camera in comparison to a 30MB/s Class 10 SD Card.

A new better combo than Eye-Fi should be available next month, and I'd rather wait for that.

Here's how it works: Sandisk Extreme Pro MicroSD + PQI Air Card. They are both coming out next month.

The Sandisk MicroSD is not only Class 10, but way exceeds the Class at 45MB/s. The PQI AirCard has direct WiFi access from iOS and Android, and can also be accessed directly with an IP address, which enables access with otherwise unsupported phones.

I doubt Eye-Fi would come up with anything like this combo in terms of speed and convenience.

Yep. Another +1 for Google Voice and Talkatone on the iOS. It simply is unbelievable - my friends have no idea if I am out of the country, since their call, voicemail and SMS still gets through. Not that many of them have any ideas what it's like to be outside the US. :-p

The close runnerup is Skype, but it's not as free and it's not the same phone number.

I would post some Windows counterparts of the tools mentioned, since it's all OSX up there.

1. Screen capturing tool: The Windows' own Snipping Tool with Paint may suffice, but if you like the ability to capture Aero Glass, try Window Clippings. Free.

2. There is nothing quite as streamlined as Alfred, but you can simply use the Start Menu search for most tasks, and add a few Start Menu Search Federation / Connectors to expand its functionality.

3. Microsoft OneNote: The organization is better than Evernote, imo, if you're into collecting pieces of notes and consolidating them into bigger ones over time, while Evernote is better at individual small pieces of notes. With SkyDrive, it's now also on the cloud instead of only desktop. Free for iOS, Windows Phone 7 and web. $80 for Windows.

4. Windows Live Sync: Like Dropbox, but better, as it not only syncs your files to the cloud storage within its storage limit, but I can also sync my 120GB music collection across my computers, Macs and PCs included. Free.

5. Trillian: Like Adium, Trillian is a mult-network chat client, but it is superior in its ability of syncing of messages and contacts across the cloud, with support of Macs, PCs, iOS, Android and more. It also supports Skype voice chat so one less app to install. Free.

6. Google Chrome: Synchronized with Google Account, my bookmarks, autofill and passwords are immediately available on my new computers. Free.

7. Microsoft Security Essentials: Reliable anti-virus and anti-malware protection from the guys who made your OS. No nagging prompts and ugly dialogs like other antivirus software. Free.
