I so agree with Godisinthedetails: hire a good real estate agent. They really should do the work. I'm an architect and I know what sort of fee we get for a house - a we're the one's who designed the damned thing, wrote the specs, did the drawings, supervised the construction and continue to bear the liability. If I'm going to pay 6% (indirectly) when I buy a house, and another 6% (directly) when I sell it, I want an agent who works for that fee. Far too much of the cost of home ownership supports agents who are not really professionals but part-times. I realize their commissions are split in various ways, but then my fee supports many staff, too. At any rate, I'm venting, when I should simply say "Indeed get an agent, but make certain that agent earns her/his commission." Having an agent blithely tell you that a kitchen and bath remodeling, a landscape makeover, and a full-blown staging will help is basically saying, "I'm not really good at this so shell out lots of money and make it easier for me." HGTV, et al., seem to be missing the point that your house your home - where you live - and not just a commodity that can be tweaked and accessorized with real estate cosmetics. We prefer the Sealy mattress ad whose tag line is: "“Whatever You Do in Bed, Sealy Supports It”. It, too, is a clever ad but carries a social issues/political wallop. Hilarious New Video Commercial for Beautyrest |

I'm an architect and I did fine, but I genuinely felt the questions were either poorly phrased or that the answers were not, in fact, all that accurate. And asking where the term "painted ladies" comes from really does imply asking about its origin and not when it was cleverly employed as a book title. Having, decades ago, gotten through the architectural registration exam, this pop quiz really does underscore two things; it is not a measure of anyone's architectural IQ, and it reflects the reader's capacity to "test well". It is the architectural equivalent of a Cosmo "test" to see whether that boyfriend really is right for you. It does seem to have kept us occupied for a few minutes. While I like all of the above comments, and I like williamsweyr's best, I have to say I've always wondered why people rarely project images onto their white walls? We now renovated two kitchens using the IKEA system. In each case we ordered online, and the delivery was remarkably swift, accurate and in perfect condition. I'm an architect and old enough to not quite fathom why anyone would use anything other than IKEA's system: it works, it's affordable and it looks great. I'm tall and the various leg and base options have allowed me to tailor the kitchen counter height so that chopping, slicing and dicing are done without back pain. Having used a variety of other cabinetry manufacturers, as well as custom woodworking studios, I'll use IKEA in the future. There's something to be said for maintaining both one's sanity and one's financial well-being. Pearmelon may have hit the nail with the question asking whether or not this inability to behave as a guest is an American thing. Our sense, and we have experienced the full spectrum of guests' behavior, is that poor manners are, in a sense, taught by poor parents: children who have been waited on hand-and-foot tend to grow up expecting the same thing from their hosts. But the total self-absorption does seem to be overabundant in the US. When guests use our second home (we allow family to use it when we're absent) the rules are strict (sheets and towels cleaned and replaced, dishes done, vacuuming, etc, and everything returned to its place). When family and friends announce that they'll be in New York, our response is always, "Great! Call us when you get settled in your hotel. We'll make plans for dinner." Humanity is a glorious ideal, but the reality can be ghastly. Yes, we're misanthropic and curmudgeonly - but we've kept our sanity. 5 Tips for Being a Good Overnight Guest |

This post was like a fresh breeze. This house is one of the most sane and serene series of spaces I've seen. It is stylish but does not have that brittle hipper-than-thou veneer. It clearly doesn't strike everyone as perfect, yet it has the sense of home that everyone strives for. And we like urban chickens. Jason and Michael's Contemporary Farm House House Tour |

I have no idea what the Conran credenza costs, but something similar albeit a bit less sophisticated but with the same faceted white front, is CB2's Alba Credenza. In terms of its articulated structure, the Alba is more architectural, and I'd guess a good deal less expensive. Ideas For Something Similar to Conran's Wave Credenza? Good Questions |

Bravo to Christopher and Merete! Their house is one the sanest, most charming projects to appear on AT. Maybe my reaction stems from my current sense that my partner and I need to downsize and liberate ourselves from the demands of larger spaces and the attendant roster of possessions. My guess is that the conversations, the dinners, and the good night's sleeps are just as splendid in their house. Probably better. Christopher and Merete should also be congratulated for (in their comments about the house) encouraging others to tackle and complete a DIY project, if not an entire tiny house. I have to admit I'm jealous, but perhaps it's just the embryonic twinges of being inspired by their house. Many thanks. May their documentary film win converts! Rage Daily is spot on about the revolving library - keeping only those books that you will reread in the future. Cookbooks had been my downfall, but then I realized I regularly used only a few and that the others were rarely or never consulted. I gave (foisted, really) these never consulted cookbooks to friends still smitten by the never-too-many-recipes foodies. And then I turned my eyes to my batterie de cuisine... 12 Things You Probably Own Too Many Of |

As attractive as it all is, my eye flew right to the dining area wall-mounted wing-arm lamp over the table. I wondered if it was a Prouve cantilever light or the Flos light... but it's neither. Please: more information about the light? I have a similar situation with no possibility of an overhead light, and the number of candles necessary to see the meal would preclude anyplace for food. I agree with an earlier comment - the gray walls and white fabric at the window are tremendously handsome. Alec & David's Love in Hell's Kitchen House Call |

You've succeeded brilliantly in transforming a builder's grade tract house into a very appealing home. I could comment on lots of things that struck me as intelligent or charming, but the one thing that really hit me (and for which I applaud madly) was the kitchen. Hallelujah!: what a relief to see white appliances so well-intergrated and be spared the tyranny of stainless steel! Bravo! The Roeder's Modern Life is Beautiful House Tour |

Amy Lauren: you can still enjoy Brimfield! The area was one of three sites the Commonwealth was considering for a recently permitted mammoth gambling casinos. Would sun-filled days of strolling through fields of antiques stalls, unearthing treasures, be replaced by sunless days of sitting in front of slot machines? Fortunately, no. The MGM casino developer pulled out in March, and is looking for a better site. Brimfield is safe but the blight will occur elsewhere, alas. Happy Brimfield Everyone! Brimfield Antiques Show 2012 |

I think there's way too much pressure on the average home dweller, while contemplating and executing a kitchen renovation, to bow to prevailing trends when it would require an utterly unnecessary expense. That is to say, cost or affordability, are valid determinants. But then, so too is getting what one really wants - I'm just questioning why a vast majority of people are demanding granite countertops and stainless steel appliances. I doubt they've given it much thought and are instead parroting what they've heard and seen for less than real or personal reasons. Back to your question - the ideal countertop: one that's clean and uncluttered. And anyone can afford it! Kitchen Countertop Preference: Get Better with Age or Stay Looking Brand New? |
