That baby changing table with the two sculptures of ungulates framing it is the stupidest design decision I have ever seen. Whoever placed those sculptures there obviously has never changed a squirming, thrashing baby's diaper. Let's hope nobody impales an infant in the name of Classic Glam.

Nothing says "I've never read a book before" better than a Reader's Digest Condensed Book.

The introduction of a new medium doesn't make older media obsolete, it makes them shift. There is still a place in the world for AM radio (baseball games, right-wing nut jobs) and vinyl records, and there will always be a place for books printed on paper as long as another medium doesn't improve upon their advantages--they can last hundreds of years, they don't require electricity, they can still be read even when damaged, back-and-forth flippability between pages, cheapness, and the ability to borrow and share them. E-readers are at a disadvantage in all these categories. That's not to say they may make up smaller of a market share in their category of consumer goods. A good book to read on this topic is The Gutenberg Elegies by Sven Birkerts.

The way to deal with the hand chair is to upholster it a glove. That way it'll go from something that represented your early design sense but now seems dated to a piece of art that represents your new, more sophisticated tastes and sensibilities. You need to interact with the giant hand, be in communication with it and by doing so communicate with your younger self.

What a lovely home all around. I can imagine hearing a lot of laughter in these rooms. Not a fan of arranging books by color in principle, but the use of color in general throughout the apartment is totally masterful.

My god, that desk chair is the exact model my parents had in the 70s! I grew up sittin in that chair. They bought theirs in the Virgin Islands. Where did you get yours?

I went through the same process a year ago, too. It's exhilarating putting together your own place and not having to compromise on design. You made a great space for you and your daughter. Really impressive, feels like the right combination of kid and adult.

This one deserves to win on reading taste alone. (I've got some stories in a few of those McSweeney's :) )

The patterns say "home." The soundtrack to the first video says "funeral home."

I hate this trend. It's as though Ernie and Bert designed one's home.

I stand totally corrected. But if you like the art, do check out Wayne White!

Folks--the art is, if I'm not mistaken, by the artist Wayne White. He was a designer for Pee Wee's Playhouse, and has done a lot of paintings where he takes an old landscapes he finds at thrift stores then paints text on top of them. I recommend his book "Maybe Now I'll Get the Respect I So Richly Deserve."

If you love books as design elements (as well as being great reads), might I recommend two very cool shops on Etsy.

The first is Pipi Pompon. She sells kooky books (Swingers' Guide for the Single Girl; Enjoy Your Skunks; Wonders of Victorian Engineering), vintage children's books, and color-based book collections.

The second is Phillipa Finch, who specializes in paperbacks by specific mid-century book designers (Browse her Edward Gorey, Paul Rand, Milton Glaser sections).
