Oh, also, a note on the wall paint: The previous owner actually painted three stripes on that wall, the very bottom is a dark brown, the same color as the fireplace. I intend to cover the brown with the blue in the above stripe, so at least I'll be going from three stripes to two!

Makeover Ideas for Brown-Painted Fireplace? Good Questions

Hey Y'all! Original OP here. Thank you all for your suggestions, a lot of them seem very feasible and definitely some good ideas.

I am hesitant to board over it, as I do like the basic shape, but there is white plaster throughout the rest of the house, so maybe stucco/plaster is my best option. Also, I think I saw a question about light earlier, the wall to the right of the fireplace opens to the backyard, and there are floor to ceiling windows & a sliding glass door all along that wall, so there is plenty of light. I had the window's closed for the photos because they were washing everything out.

As for the paint stripes, I totally get why some people don't like them, so no hurt feelings there, but the green and blues are carried out through the rest of the house, so I am kind of partial to them. In context, they definitely tie the house together.

I am thinking a white modern fireplace with the white-based watercolors might be nice and light, allowing me to keep my stripey wall while still adding some height/visual space. Or maybe a dove gray.... or...hmm... so many ideas!

I'll let you all know how the project ends up going. :-)

OK, so random question, but I figure this would be the pertinent place to ask:

Does anyone know of an appraiser familiar with celebrity belongings/memorabilia that can come to me? I own a gorgeous gilt-wood headboard (supposedly) previously owned by Marilyn Monroe, but I can't really verify it's provenance because I can't really take it anywhere. It's made for a California King bed, and it is ENORMOUS. Plus, it's fairly fragile, so I really don't want to move it more than I have to. For reference: I am in AZ, and my mom received the headboard as a gift 25+ years ago. I am also unable to contact the gift-er. Any advice? Am I on a fools errand?

The stain looks like something similar to "charcoal". I live in AZ and am looking at exposing my concrete floors, and that red/amber color you always see is the standard, un-stained color of the original concrete. If your house was built pre-60's, you probably have the same color for your concrete, but it depends on the neighborhood. You can stain it darker, like this charcoal, but if you want to go lighter, you have to jack-hammer through the first layer of your foundation and re-lay that layer of the foundation in a lighter color, which I've been told is PRICEY. Which is probably why there is so much red/amber concrete in the valley. :-)

DOG HAIR EVERYWHERE. I already had two cats by the time I got my dog, so I didn't even think it would be a problem, since I already had it under control right? WRONG. My Navy, beautifully nubbly-textured couch is about 90% white, coarse dog hair, and nothing seems to pull all of it up. Lint rollers (adhesive and fabric), wet washcloth, nothing. Even when the room is super clean that couch (which is new, BTW) always looks messy. And I thought a dark couch would always look clean because it would hide stains. AHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHA, What folly that was.
